First-Half Strike Seals Falcons' Victory

UNLV men's soccer falls 2-1 to Air Force Friday afternoon

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) — A late first-half foul ended the Rebels' three-game unbeaten run Friday afternoon.

London Aghedo's 44th-minute penalty kick gave Air Force (2-4-2 overall, 1-0-0 WAC) a two-goal lead as they held off UNLV (1-4-4, 0-1-0), 2-1, at Peter Johann Memorial Field.

"We started really well, but it's hard to start well and go down a goal," UNLV Head Coach BJ Craig said. "I thought we grew as the game went and we could have scored three times today.

"The community really came out strong to support us, especially on a Friday morning. The crowd was loud and gave us a lot of energy."

The Rebels formed numerous attack chances but came up short for the first time in three weeks.

Jake Chaffetz booted a deflected corner kick for the Falcons' first goal in the 22nd minute. It was a play that arguably could have been called in the Rebels' favor as UNLV argued that a breakaway ball pushed beyond the endline was touched last by Chaffetz. But Air Force took the advantage on its set piece.

Nick Bisagno drew a foul when he tripped over Cesar Carbajal in the penalty area in the 44th minute. Aghebo fired his penalty shot right, opposite of Andrew Sway's dive, to grant Air Force a 2-0 halftime lead.

The tables turned in the second half as UNLV's Gabe Sanchez drew a penalty in the 55th minute as the teams fought for the volley of a corner kick. Nico Clasen roped the free kick chest-high, right of Falcon' keeper Jason Byszewski.

Each team had their last true offensive chance in the 74th minute. Skyler Goo's 15-yard blast was blocked just feet from the goal as the crowd roared for a handball call. Sway layed out to save Jacob Angeletti's launch from the short left channel on the next end.

"It just didn't happen for us. You've got to step up and play big. These are lessons we've been learning and this is the next step.

"We've had a good rebound mentality through the year and that will set us up well for Sunday."

UNLV is back at Peter Johann Memorial Field Sunday at 7 p.m., hosting Grand Canyon.

The game will be streamed live on WACInternational.TV.
