Lady Rebels Clobber Broncos For Eighth Straight Win

UNLV tops Boise State 73-61 on Aces Night at the Cox Pavilion

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) — On a night celebrating the Las Vegas Aces' championship, the Lady Rebels extended their lead in a journey for their second straight conference title.

UNLV (17-2 overall, 7-0 Mountain West) pummeled Boise State 73-61 Monday night at the Cox Pavilion.

Alyssa Durazo-Frescas and Desi-Rae Young put Saturday's jam session on repeat as the UNLV duo top the charts again. Durazo-Frescas scored a team-high 16 points and, despite early foul trouble, Young bucketed 5-for-6 from the field and 5-of-6 at the line for 15 points.

"We know we're going to get everyone's best shot and everyone's going to come with a plan," UNLV Head Coach Lindy La Rocque said. "Once we figure it out, we adjust and get the job done."

Aces stars A'ja Wilson and Jackie Young joined head coach Becky Hammon and other staffers on court at halftime to celebrate the city's first professional championship team. UNLV then finished off Boise State to improve to 17-2, a record not seen in 33 seasons.

"For a game environment, it was great. The energy felt a lot like a WNBA game for a while. I think it says a lot for their organization to support us and young women in this community."

Boise State appeared to have the size and game plan to hang with the Lady Rebels. But UNLV's zone pressure and sharp-shooting second half wore down the Broncos. The Broncos made seven of their first nine field-goal attempts yet coughed up the ball on one-third of their possessions. UNLV scored 31 points off 21 Boise State turnovers.

"We knew we wanted to pick up the tempo a little bit. We knew defensively we had a few miscues in the first quarter. To hold them to 6 points in that second quarter, that's what kept us in the game when we didn't do so well at the start."

UNLV led 30-27 at halftime.

Abby Muse's layup 2 ½ minutes into the second half tied the score 33-33. The Broncos wouldn't rein in the Lady Rebels again.

UNLV would drain five of six 3-point attempts over the next 6 minutes to pull ahead by 17 points.

Alyssa Brown ignited the bombardment after being left alone at the top of the key. Durazo-Frescas added back-to-back treys and then Kiara Jackson joined the party after Brown's steal two possessions later. Brown finished the period with a buzzer-beating 3 to make it a 60-43 advantage for UNLV.

Durazo-Frescas has had quite the week. The sophomore guard shook off a season-long shooting slump to average 16.7 points while shooting 50 percent on 3-pointers the last three games

Boise State's Elodie Lalotte scored 12 points in the second half to lead the game with 19.

Muse added 12 points, but struggled after shooting 4-for-5 for 8 points in the first period. The 6-foot-3 forward ended the game counting just two of her next seven attempts.

UNLV is 7-0 in conference play, two games ahead of a tie for second-place between Wyoming and Colorado State—the two teams the Lady Rebels will face on the road at the end of this week.
