LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV men's soccer was outlasted by No. 12 Seattle, 2-1, in its Senior Day match Sunday afternoon at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
The Rebels (5-7-4, 3-3-2) now await their first-round matchup for next week's WAC Tournament, while the conference regular season champion Redhawks (12-2-3, 7-0-1) will have a first-round bye.
In the first half, the Scarlet & Gray made its way onto the scoreboard first via senior
Nico Lopez's third goal of the season in the 15th minute. After being honored with his classmates prior to kickoff, Lopez kicked off the scoring after the ball pinballed off two Seattle defenders to him inside the box for the score from the left side.
In spite of the outcome, the Rebels mustered seven shot attempts in the second half as they finished even in targets during the final 45 minutes. The determining factor, however, proved to be a pair of miraculous saves by the Redhawks to back their two goals in the 50th and 60th minutes.
QUOTABLE: "We wanted to honor our seniors today and we appreciate all they have given to UNLV. We were disappointed in our second half performance after a good start. Seattle is a good team and well-coached, but it was an even game and we made mistakes that we should not be making at this time of the year. We created good chances, but we needed to be more clinical in our final actions to win today. We have to keep improving and we will be ready for next week."
-UNLV Head Coach BJ Craig
