Runnin' Rebels Fall To Richmond, 82-65, On Sunshine Slam's Final Day

Jackie Johnson III made five 3-pointers for a season-high 17 points on Tuesday.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (UNLVRebels.com) - Jackie Johnson III made five 3-pointers and scored a season-high 17 points, but the UNLV men's basketball team (2-3) lost to Richmond, 82-65, on the final day of the Sunshine Slam at the Ocean Center on Tuesday.

Kalib Boone and Jalen Hill also scored in double figures, with 14 and 10 points, respectively.

Richmond (3-2) had four players score 12 or more points with Jordan King and Neal Quinn leading the way with 21 and 20.

SHOOTING PERCENTAGES: Richmond shot 60.0% (33 of 55) from the field for the game and 64.3% (9 of 14) on 3-pointers. The Spiders were 57.1% from the field in the first half (16 of 28) and 63.0% (17 of 27) in the second, while they converted 71.4% (5 of 7) on 3-pointers in the first half and 57.1% (4 of 7) in the second. 

UNLV shot 38.7% (24 of 62) from the field for the game and 28.0% (7 of 25) on 3-pointers. The Runnin' Rebels were 31.4% (11 of 35) from the field in the first half and 48.1% (13 of 27) in the second, while they made just 8.3% (1 of 12) on 3-pointers in the first half and 46.2% (6 of 13) in the second.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Richmond jumped out to an 11-0 start to the game, while UNLV made just 2 of its first 13 attempts from the field, including missing its first seven 3-point attempts. The Spiders' increased their advantage fo 18-4 before the Runnin' Rebels cut it to eight at 25-17. Richmond went into halftime with a 15-point lead (38-23) and led by as many as 22 in the second half. The Runnin' Rebels cut it to 13, but that was as close as they would get the rest of the way.

OTHER NOTES: 
- Dedan Thomas Jr. left the game early in the second half with an injury, but ended up returning to action. He finished the game with four assists.
- Hill led the team in rebounding with seven, while Luis Rodriguez added six boards to go with eight points. 
- Boone was 6 of 8 from the field on the night, adding a steal and a block.
- Johnson III was 5 of 7 on 3-pointers with an assist and a steal.
- King was 4 of 5 on 3-pointers for Richmond, adding six assists and a block.
- Richmond blocked seven shots in the first half.
- Richmond led in points in the paint 40-28, but UNLV outscored the Spiders in second-chance points 14-2. The Runnin' Rebels had 12 offensive rebounds and their bench outscored Richmond's 35-20.
UNLV has made at least one 3-pointer in a NCAA-record 1,198 straight games.
