HENDERSON, Nev. (UNLVRebels.com) - Four Runnin' Rebels scored in double figures led by Dedan Thomas Jr.'s season-high-tying 17 points, but the UNLV men's basketball team suffered a 78-75 loss to Loyola Marymount Saturday night at Dollar Loan Center.
Kalib Boone added 15 points and a season-high five blocks for the Runnin' Rebels (3-4), while Isaiah Cottrell scored 14 and Justin Webster had 10 points.
LMU (6-4) was led by Dominick Harris' 28 points. Alex Merkviladze added 15 and Lars Thiemann scored 13. Merkviladze also had a game-high nine rebounds.
The game, which was a part of the Jack Jones Classic, was UNLV's first since Wednesday's tragedy took place on campus. The Runnin' Rebels' contest at Dayton, which was scheduled for later that night, was canceled.
CLOSE FINISH: UNLV trailed by five points with 31 seconds to play (76-71). Thomas Jr.'s jumper cut the deficit to three with 27 seconds left and then a Luis Rodriguez steal and dunk trimmed it to just one point with 12 seconds to go. LMU missed both of its free-throw opportunities with 10 seconds remaining, but Thomas Jr. missed the potential game-winning floater from inside the free throw line with three seconds left. LMU made two free throws with one second to go for the final margin.
NOTES:
- Jalen Hill, UNLV's leading rebounder, was out with a wrist injury.
- It was UNLV's first game since Nov. 28
- Luis Rodriguez added eight points and a team-high eight rebounds for UNLV. Jackie Johnson also scored eight points.
- Thomas Jr. had a game-high eight assists with just two turnovers.
- Harris shot 10 of 19 for LMU, including 5 of 11 3-pointers.
- LMU (17 of 24) shot 12 more free throws than UNLV (8 of 12) did.
- LMU led in second-chance points 23-7 and in bench scoring 39-11.
- There were 11 lead changes and 12 ties throughout the game.
- LMU led 38-35 at the half.
- UNLV has made at least one 3-pointer in a NCAA-record 1,200 straight games.
