Rebels Close Classic With Wild Walk-Off Win

UNLV rallies in seventh inning to top Cal State Bakersfield, 5-4

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) — Down to its final out, Janyssa Martin's fly to right field dropped between three fielders as UNLV rallied for a walk-off win Sunday afternoon.

UNLV (6-5) defeated CSU Bakersfield (2-8) 5-4 in wild finish.

The Rebels had a 2-0 lead needing just two outs to finish the game. CSUB's Karissa Muncey hit a grand slam that flipped UNLV's two-run lead into a two-run deficit.

UNLV's Alexys Herrera, who reached base on her first hit as a Rebel, scored on a wild pitch. Denise Armendariz tied the game with a two-out RBI single to left field before Martin's miraculous hit sent home pinch-running Skyler Shaw for the game-winner.

The last two runs were to only two UNLV batted in.

In the third inning, Maddie Schmidt reached home on a throwing error when CSUB catcher Maya Molina-Villare overthrew the third baseman, who was crashing on a bunt attempt, on a steal from second. Visser, who traveled from first to third on the error, scored in the next at-bat from a wild pitch.

Ellie Zellien (1-1) was masterful in the circle until Muncey's moonshot. The junior transfer from Cal State Fullerton retired the first 13 batters before surrendering her first baserunner in the fifth, an eight-pitch walk to Shaylene Fuimaono. CSUB's first hit didn't come until the seventh inning.

UNLV finished the Desert Classic 4-1 to punch its overall record above .500.

Armendariz led the Rebels for the weekend with eight hits in 17 at-bats, five runs scored and five RBIs.

UNLV next travels to the Frost Classic in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The Rebels will face Western Michigan on Friday, Feb. 24, ahead of games against Southeast Missouri State, Chattanooga and Memphis.
