Rebels Fall Short To Sun Devils

PHOENIX (UNLVRebels.com) – The Hustlin' Rebels came up short to the Sun Devils, 3-6, Tuesday evening at the Phoenix Municipal Stadium during the single-game, mid week contest against Arizona State. 

UNLV dropped to 3-1, while ASU improved to 4-0. 

REBEL OF THE GAME: Alex Pimentel went 1-for-3 at the plate with one run scored and one RBI for the Rebels. 

TURNING POINT: The Sun Devils took the lead early in the game, scoring back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the first frame. The Scarlet & Gray closed the gap in the top of the seventh inning with back-to-back RBI singles, only for ASU to answer back in the bottom of the frame with two runs on two hits to secure the lead. 

Matt Tieding (1-0) earned his first save of the season after going 2.0 innings of relief and allowing only one run. 

Brock Peery (S,2) earned his second save of the season after throwing two-thirds of an inning of relief and not allowing a run or a hit.

Noah Mattera (0-1) was saddled with his first loss of the season after pitching 4.0 innings, allowing three runs on five hits and only three strikeouts. 

UP NEXT: UNLV will head to the Golden State for the Tony Gwynn Legacy tournament featuring UC San Diego, Hawai'i, UC Irvine and Washington State. The four-day contest will be held at the Triton Ballpark, Fowler Park & Cunningham Field and Tony Gwynn Stadium beginning Friday, February 24. 

NOTES AND NEWS
- The 31 runs scored by the Hustlin' Rebels on Sunday, February 19 marked the second most runs scored in program history, the first being 37 runs scored against San Jose State in 1986. 
- UNLV sits at a 3-1 record, the best start to the season since 2018. 
- This is the first time since 2019 that the Sun Devils have taken down the Hustlin' Rebels.
