Hustlin' Rebels Come Up Short Against USD

SAN DIEGO (UNLVRebels.com) – The Hustlin' Rebels fell to San Diego, 6-5, during the second game of a Tony Gwynn Legacy doubleheader Sunday night at Fowler Park.

The Scarlet & Gray dropped to 4-3, while San Diego improved to 5-0-1. 

REBEL OF THE GAME: Austin Kryszczuk came in to pinch hit in the top seventh frame and hit a two-run homer to tie it up against the Toreros, 5-5. 

TURNING POINT: The game was scoreless until the top of the fourth inning when the Hustlin' Rebels scored three runs on three hits, including a 2 RBI double from Jason Sharman. San Diego answered back in the bottom of the fourth frame with a 2 RBI double of their own to bring it within one, 3-2. The Toreros took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning with a two-run homer to bring the score to 5-3. The game was tied going into the bottom of the ninth inning, 5-5, only for USD to get an RBI single and take the win. 

Ryan Robinson (1-0) earned his first win of the season after pitching 2.1 innings of relief and allowing only two hits with four strikeouts. 

Nick Rupp (0-1) was saddled with his first loss of the season after also going 2.1 innings of relief and allowing one run on one hit. 

UP NEXT: The Hustlin' Rebels will close out the tournament with a game against Washington State set for Monday afternoon at 1 p.m.

NOTES AND NEWS
- The 31 runs scored by the Hustlin' Rebels on Sunday, February 19 marked the second most runs scored in program history, the first being 37 runs scored against San Jose State in 1986. 
- The Scarlet & Gray have faced off against USD a total of 34 times, the all-time record is now tied 17-17 between both programs.
