SAN DIEGO (UNLVRebels.com) – The Hustlin' Rebels handed UC Irvine its first loss of the season after dominating the Anteaters, 10-4, Sunday afternoon at Fowler Park for game one of a Tony Gwynn Legacy doubleheader.
UNLV will continue play tonight with a contest against USD set for 6 p.m.
The Scarlet & Gray improved to 4-2, while UCI dropped to 5-1.
REBEL OF THE GAME: Alex Pimentel went 4-for-5 at the plate with a 3 RBI double, 1 RBI double and two runs scored for UNLV.
TURNING POINT: The Hustlin' Rebels took the lead early in the top half of the first frame, scoring five runs on six hits with a 3 RBI double from Pimentel. The Anteaters answered back in the bottom of the second inning with a home run, only for UNLV to add two more runs in the top of the fifth with a 2 RBI double from Paul Myro. The 'Eaters cut UNLV's lead in half in the bottom of the seventh frame with three runs on three hits, including a two-run homer to bring it to 8-4.
Josh Sharman (2-0) earned his second win of the season after pitching 6.0 innings and allowing only one run on five hits with six strikeouts.
Jack Sellinger (S,1) earned his first save of the season after throwing 3.0 frames of relief and allowing only two hits with five strikeouts.
Cole Roberts (0-1) was saddled with his first loss of the season after only throwing one third of an inning and allowing five runs on six hits with zero strikeouts.
UP NEXT: The Hustlin' Rebels will close out the tournament with a game against Washington State set for Monday afternoon at 1 p.m.
NOTES AND NEWS
- The 31 runs scored by the Hustlin' Rebels on Sunday, February 19 marked the second most runs scored in program history, the first being 37 runs scored against San Jose State in 1986.
- The Scarlet & Gray have faced off against UC Irvine 81 times, with the first meeting taking place in 1970. UC Irvine still holds the all-time record, notching 42 wins to UNLV's 37.
- This was the first time this season the Rebels have played the bottom of the ninth inning.
