Rebels Sweep Sunday For Flawless Frost Classic Showing

UNLV tops host Chattanooga, Memphis to finish 4-0 in tournament

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) — The Rebels finished a sweep of the Jim Frost Classic in Chattanooga, Tennessee with two wins Sunday.

UNLV (10-5) topped host Chattanooga, 5-3, and Memphis, 4-1, Sunday morning in games delayed by one day due to rain. The Rebels finished the invitational 4-0 and run their winning streak to seven consecutive games.

UNLV continues its road tournament schedule this weekend at St. George, Utah, for the Trailblazer Classic. In the field are BYU, Oregon State, Portland State, Utah Tech and Utah Valley.

Game One: UNLV 5, Chattanooga 3

Janyssa Martin drove in three runs, including the go-ahead home run in the top of the fourth as UNLV rallied to take down Chattanooga, 5-3, on its home field Sunday morning.

Chattanooga scored three runs in the first inning but was stalled at the plate after Jasmine Martin (5-1) threw 6 â…” shutout innings in relief. Martin struck out six batters and allowed just three baserunners.

Janyssa Martin batted in UNLV's first run, scoring Sofia Morales on a groundout. Then Lauryn Barker plated Kelsie Kelso with a sacrifice fly as the Rebels scored twice in the second inning.

Morales moved Kelso to second on a sacrifice bunt, but the small ball became inconsequential as Janyssa Martin blasted a moonshot over the centerfield fence.

UNLV added insurance in the seventh when Denise Armendariz knocked in Hailey Schmaltz with a single down the right-field line.

Game Two: UNLV 4, Memphis 1

UNLV struck early and cruised to a 4-1 win over Memphis in its Frost Classic finale.

April Visser's two-out, two-RBI double in the first inning proved to be enough to capture a sweep of the Rebels four-game stint in Chattanooga.

Maddie Schmidt, who scored in the first, batted in Barker in the second inning.

The Tigers moved a baserunner around in the fifth when pinch-runner Bria Lucero scored on a fielding error. But Morales drove home Alexys Herrera to push the Rebels' lead back to 3 for the remainder of the contest.

Alanna Thiede (1-1) allowed just three hits and struck out four in the complete-game victory.
