Durazo-Frescas' Game-Winner Caps Wild Finish

UNLV wins 14th straight after 23 lead changes against Fresno State

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) — Alyssa Durazo-Frescas buried a 3-pointer from the left corner with 12.7 seconds to play to put UNLV on top after a teeter-totter second half Thursday night at the Cox Pavilion.

UNLV (23-2 overall, 13-0 Mountain West) held off Fresno State (8-18, 1-12) 64-63 to extend its winning streak to 14 games. It's the third-longest active winning streak in Division I women's basketball. The Lady Rebels are now one win away from claiming a share of the Mountain West regular-season championship for the second straight season.

Desi-Rae Young scored a game-high 22 points and carried the Lady Rebels throughout much of the contest. But it was her assist to Durazo-Frescas that will be remembered as the play of the game.

"I knew she had it," Young said. "She's one of the best shooters I've ever played with.

"I knew Fresno State was going to double-team me and leave her, so I knew I had to make the extra pass. Essence (Booker) made the right pass and that was her 'hockey assist' as well."

However, Young was supposed to be the shooter. Down 63-61, Young grabbed an offensive rebound from Booker's missed jumper. With the shot clock off now irrelevant, Lindy La Rocque called timeout to craft a sideline out-of-bounds play.

"It was drawn up for Desi-Rae to get a quick 2, play defense and maybe get a final shot," Durazo-Frescas said. "But she trusted me and had confidence in me. So I had to make it for her."

The crowd of 1,678 rattled the rafters as the ball plunged through the net.

The Bulldogs set up their own offense but the Lady Rebels' defense choked Yanina Todorova, who had put in the go-ahead layup on their previous possession, on the perimeter, forcing her to give up the ball. Booker poked away a driving dribble from Amaya West and the clock expired as West and Young chased the loose ball.

Young was nearly perfect shooting. She hit 8-of-10 from the field and 6-of-7 at the free throw line to go along with seven rebounds, three assists and three steals.

"She's our anchor and she continues to deliver," UNLV Head Coach Lindy La Rocque said, "but what I think is most impressive is she trusts her teammates. She does her job regardless if that's making the basket or making the pass."

Kiara Jackson added 9 more for UNLV. Durazo-Frescas scored 8 points and Alyssa Brown had 7.

Keely Brown scored a career-high 19 points off the bench for Fresno State.  Yanina Todorova scored 13 and West finished with 11.

Fresno State led 32-31 at halftime. It was the only fifth time this season UNLV had trailed at the midpoint. Neither team had more than a 3-point lead for the final 28 minutes of the game as the lead switched hands 23 times.

"They had six losses by 6 points or less…they are better than their record," La Rocque said. "It's that part of the season where some teams are playing with reckless abandon. We got the critical stops when we really needed them and our team finds a way to win.

"Sometimes you've got to trust what you do. And have a little bit of luck on your side."
