LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) — UNLV's heavy hitters overpowered UNR for an 8-4 win Friday at Christina M. Hixson Park in Reno, Nevada.
The top of the Rebels' order batted 8-for-12 with seven RBIs and struck from the outset. Leadoff singles from
Maddie Schmidt and
April Visser set up
Ariana Martinez for a 3-run home run in the top of the first.
UNLV's (15-14 overall, 1-3 Mountain West) eight runs were the most given up by the Wolf Pack (20-5, 1-3) this season.
Visser, who went 4-for-4 at the plate, knocked in runs with a single in the second inning and a two-RBI double in the fourth. Martinez drove in Visser for her game-leading fourth RBI.
UNR's Tyra Clary, the Mountain West's leading pitcher, relieved Carly Brown (L, 8-4) after Martinez's hit and stymied the Rebels' lineup. Clary retired seven straight batters before Visser stepped into the batter's box for her fourth hit in the sixth inning.Â
The Wolf Pack put two runners in scoring position with one out in the sixth. UNLV intentionally loaded the bases and watched its strategy prevail. Aaliyah Jenkins' check-swing dribbler was scoop tossed by
Ellie Zellien for a force out at home. Then Charli Hawkins, who had a solo home run in the fifth, grounded out to first.
UNLV freshman
Kelsie Kelso added an insurance run with a solo homer in the top of the seventh. It was the first home run—and only third earned run—given up by Clary this season.
Zellien (W, 4-2) retired the side in order in the seventh to seal a complete-game victory.
UNLV and UNR play game two of the three-game Silver State Series presented by America First Credit Union Saturday at 2 p.m.Â
