LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV baseball team came up short against Fresno State by a score of 7-5 in 11 innings during the second of a three-game Mountain West series Saturday afternoon at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
The Scarlet & Gray dropped to 7-13, 3-5 MW, while the Bulldogs improved to 12-9, 6-4 MW.
REBEL OF THE GAME: Kade Higgins went 2-for-5 at the plate, including a three-run double for the Rebels.
BACK AND FORTH: Fresno State held a two-run lead going into the top of the fourth inning before the Rebels were able to cut the deficit to one after a fielder's choice RBI from Chase Gallegos brought home Alex Pimentel. The Bulldogs answered back in the top of the sixth with a two-run double from Tyler Davis to give them a three-run lead. Fresno State increased its advantage to 5-1 going into the bottom of the eighth, but the Rebels were able to answer in the bottom of the frame, walking in a run and getting a three-run double from Higgins to tie the game at five.
EXTRA INNINGS WIN FOR FRESNO STATE: With the score tied at 5 going into the top of the 11th inning, runs brought in by a wild pitch and then an RBI single from Marco Pirruccello put the Bulldogs up for good.
Trevor Garcia (2-2) earned his second win of the season for Fresno State after throwing 3.0 innings of relief and not allowing a run or hit.
Noah Carabajal (0-2) suffered his second loss of the season for UNLV after pitching 1.1 innings of relief and allowing two runs on two hits with one strikeout.
UP NEXT: UNLV will conclude the three-game conference series against Fresno State Sunday afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 12:05 p.m.
