LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) — The Wolf Pack captured game two of the softball edition of the Silver State Series presented by America First Credit Union, setting up a Sunday afternoon rubber match against the Rebels.
UNR (21-5 overall, 2-3 Mountain West) beat UNLV (15-15, 1-4) 11-6 Saturday at Christina M. Hixson Park in Reno, Nevada.
The Wolf Pack scored the first three runs and then gapped the Rebels with a 4-run third inning to answer UNLV.
After UNR"s 3-0 start,
Janyssa Martin evened the score in one swing. UNLV's center fielder smacked a two-out, bases-loaded triple in the top of the third to knot the game. Right fielder
Skyler Shaw hit a double in the next at-bat to plate Martin for a 4-3 lead.
Defensive miscues allowed the Wolf Pack to regain their three-run lead. A wild pitch allowed Gabby Herrera to reach home and put Bella Kordonowy at third base ahead of Haley Painter's RBI single. Bridgette Gilliano stole home while the Rebels caught Maile Olsen stealing second. Then Hannah Di Genova slugged a solo home run to finish the scoring. All four runs were unearned.
April Visser blasted her first offering from Blake Craft deep over the left-field fence to close the gap to 7-6. But Visser's two-RBI homer would be the last of the Rebel runs.Â
Craft was pulled in favor of Tyra Clary, who held UNLV to four hits over the final four innings.
Sunday's series finale starts at 12 p.m. The game will be streamed live on the Mountain West Network.
