LOS ANGELES (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV baseball team dominated Loyola Marymount 16-5 Tuesday afternoon to take the two-game, non-conference series at George C. Page Stadium.
The Rebels improved to 14-17, while the Lions dropped to 17-14.
REBEL OF THE GAME: Edarian Williams went 4-for-6 at the plate with a grand slam, a total of five RBIs, two doubles and three runs scored.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The game was tied 1-1 going into the top of the third inning before an RBI double from Williams followed by an RBI single from Braden Murphy put UNLV up by two. The Rebels plated three more runs in the top of the sixth with a sacrifice fly from Noah Rodriguez followed by back-to-back runs on errors by LMU's right fielder and third baseman, respectively. The Lions answered back in the bottom of the seventh inning with a pair of home runs, including a two-run shot from Jared Thomas, to cut the deficit to two.
TURNING POINT: With UNLV leading 6-4 going into the top of the eighth, the Rebels exploded for 10 runs on eight hits, including the grand slam from Williams, a two-run home run from Rylan Charles and a three-run double from Santino Panaro to put the Rebels in command.
Noah Mattera (1-2) secured his first win of the season for UNLV after allowing just one run on five hits in four innings of work.
Chaz McRoberts (0-1) was saddled with the loss for LMU after pitching three innings and allowing three runs on five hits with three strikeouts.
UP NEXT: UNLV will head up the coast for a three-game Mountain West series against San Jose State scheduled to begin Friday evening at 6:05 p.m.
