SAN JOSE, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV baseball team fell to San Jose State 6-2 during the first game of a three-game Mountain West series Friday night at Excite Ballpark.
The Rebels dropped to 14-18 and 7-9 in the MW, while the Spartans improved to 16-13 and 9-4 in league play.
REBEL OF THE GAME: Zack Simon pitched three innings of relief and allowed only one run on four hits with a season-high four strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED: San Jose State jumped out to a three-run lead in the bottom of the second inning with a three-run home run from Jeriah Lewis. The Scarlet & Gray were able to answer back in the top of the third with an RBI from Jacob Sharp on a fielder's choice, however, the Spartans were able to plate two more after an RBI double from Hunter Dorraugh and a run brought in by a wild pitch in the bottom of the frame. UNLV scored another run in the top of the seventh with a sacrifice fly from Braden Murphy, before San Jose State brought in one more run in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI double from Theo Hardy for the final margin.
Jonathan Clark (2-2) secured the win for the Spartans after pitching 6.2 innings and allowing two runs on three hits with three strikeouts.
Noah Carabajal (1-4) was saddled with the loss for UNLV after allowing five runs on seven hits in five innings of work.
UP NEXT: UNLV will continue the series Saturday afternoon at Excite Ballpark with first pitch scheduled for 2:05 p.m.
