LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV baseball team fell to California Baptist 9-2 during the first game of a three-game non-conference series Friday night at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
The Rebels dropped to 14-21, while the Lancers improved to 20-18.
REBEL OF THE GAME: Alex Pimentel went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double, a stolen base and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED: CBU jumped out to an early lead after an RBI triple from Josh Paino in the top of the second inning. The Lancers added two more runs in the top of the third with a two-run home run from Dusty Garcia before the Rebels brought in a run on an error by CBU's pitcher in the bottom of the frame. CBU increased its advantage to 8-1 going into the top of the eighth before plating their final run off of a solo home run from Michael Carpentier. The Scarlet & Gray added one more run in the bottom of the ninth with an RBI single from Pimentel for the final margin.
Liam Rocha (5-0) secured the win for the Lancers after pitching five innings and allowing only one run on four hits with 11 strikeouts.
Noah Carabajal (1-5) was saddled with the loss for UNLV after allowing six runs on nine hits in 5.1 innings of work.
UP NEXT: UNLV will continue the series Saturday afternoon at Earl E. Wilson Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
