Long Ball Propels Aggies To Sunday Win

UNLV sets sights on final regular-season series next weekend versus New Mexico

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) — Utah State used five home runs to run-rule UNLV 14-5 after six innings Sunday at Johnson Field in Logan, Utah.

Bookended by Ariel Fifita's double dose of first-pitch moonshots, the Aggies scored all seven runs in the fourth and fifth innings off the long ball. This turned UNLV's one-run deficit into eight in one trip through the order.

The Rebels led 3-1 entering the bottom of the third but a fielding error extended the Aggies' at-bats for Giselle Jimenez, who cleared loaded bases with a 3-RBI double.

Jimenez batted 3-for-4 with seven RBIs, the final three on a walk-off home run.

UNLV held the momentum in the early innings after exhausting Utah State starter Hailey McLean. After Sofia Morales' double, the Rebels drew three straight walks on 27 pitches to score their first run and force a change in the circle.

Morales batted 2-for-4 with one run scored.

UNLV matched its single-season walks number, adding eight Sunday to equal the program record of 201 set in 1995.

UNLV's Maddie Schmidt drew a four-pitch walk to leadoff the game, extending her on-base streak to 27 games.

The Rebels finish the regular season hosting two games against New Mexico starting Friday, May 5, at Eller Media Stadium in Las Vegas.

The loss leaves UNLV needing to finish its season winning twice against the Lobos and needing two of the three teams ahead of them in the standings (Fresno State, UNR and Utah State) to be swept in their final series.
