LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV baseball team defeated UNR 7-1 in the first of a three-game Mountain West series Thursday night at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
The Scarlet & Gray improved to 11-16 and 6-7 in the MW, while the Wolf Pack dropped to 12-16 and 3-9 in league play.
REBEL OF THE GAME: Kade Higgins went 2-for-3 at the plate with his fourth home run of the season, a solo shot in the fourth inning - with two runs scored.
HOW IT HAPPENED: UNLV took a three-run lead early in the game after scoring back-to-back runs on errors by UNR's third baseman and pitcher, respectively, followed by a two-run double from Paul Myro IV in the bottom of the second inning. The Rebels increased their advantage to four after Higgins' home run in the bottom of the fourth. The Wolf Pack answered back in the top of the fifth with an RBI triple from Mason Hirata, before the Rebels scored again when Myro was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth. The Scarlet & Gray plated two more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning after another error by UNR's third baseman and an RBI single from Myro for the final margin.
Noah Carabajal (1-3) secured his first win of the season for UNLV after allowing one run on four hits with a career-high nine strikeouts in seven innings of work.
Peyton Stumbo (2-3) was saddled with the loss for the Wolf Pack. He pitched 6.0 innings and allowed five runs on five hits with three strikeouts.
NOTES AND NEWS:
- The games against UNR will count toward the Silver State Series presented by America First Credit Union.
- The 2023 series against the Wolf Pack is currently 3-1 in favor of the Rebels.
