LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) —
Alanna Thiede pitched a no-hitter and
Ariana Martinez drove in five runs as the Rebels opened their three-game series against the Bulldogs with a run-rule victory.
UNLV (18-17 overall, 4-6 Mountain West) walked off with an 8-0 win over Fresno State (15-20, 4-3) after five innings Thursday at Eller Media Stadium.
Alanna Thiede (W, 3-4) struck out four of her 17 batters faced and allowed just three to reach base. Conversely, the Rebels put at least two runners on base in every inning.
"We did a good job of coming out with energy from the first inning," UNLV Head Coach
Kristie Fox said. "Fresno has good pitchers and they had solid at-bats. We just kept them working hard in the box and making it difficult for them."
Martinez smashed a high breaking-ball over right field to put the first two runs on the board in the bottom of the third. The lefty's homer was her team-leading ninth of the season and carried home
Maddie Schmidt, who tripled in her at-bat.
"We had opportunities early. Then, Nana hit all those RBIs and we had some clutch two-out RBIs. Those are big. When the defense is close to getting off the field and you get one more run, that's huge."
Hailey Schmaltz and
Maddie Schmidt hit back-to-back, two-out seeing-eye singles to right field to drive in two more runs before Martinez cleared the bases with a three-RBI double.
Thiede remained on point throughout. After a strikeout-passed ball let Fresno State leadoff Keahilele Mattson reach first, Thiede retired the next 12 in order before giving up a leadoff walk in the fifth.
"(UNLV assistant) Coach Tina (Andreana) prepared a great scout and Alanna did a really good job of hitting her spots."
Up 7-0,
Sofia Morales led off the bottom of the fifth with an infield single and took second on
Janyssa Martin's sacrifice bunt. Morales moved to third on a wild pitch and then
Hailey Schmaltz booted a sacrifice fly to score the mercy run.
It was Fresno State's first run-rule loss of the season.
UNLV and Fresno State return for game two on Friday at 3 p.m.
