LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV baseball team defeated Air Force 19-5 during the second game of a three-game Mountain West series Friday evening at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
The Rebels improved to 20-30 and 11-18 in the MW, while the Falcons dropped to 26-28 and 17-12 in league play.
REBEL OF THE GAME: Jacob Sharp went 4-for-6 at the plate with one home run, two doubles, three runs scored and a total of seven RBIs.
HOW IT HAPPENED: UNLV jumped out to an early lead with a two-run home run from Edarian Williams in the bottom of the first. The Falcons answered back in the top of the second, plating four runs on four hits, including a two-run double from Jay Thomason. However, the Rebels scored three runs on three hits, including a two-run single from Sharp in the bottom of the frame to take a one-run lead. UNLV held a 7-4 lead going into the bottom of the fourth, only to extend it with a two-run home run from Paul Myro IV. Air Force plated a run in the top of the fifth with a solo home run from Thomason, only for the Rebels to score four more runs on one hit in the bottom of the frame, including a three-run double from Sharp. UNLV increased its advantage to 16-5 in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single from Alex Pimentel followed by a two-run home run from Sharp. The Rebels posted three more runs with an RBI double from Jason Sharman in the bottom of the seventh followed by a two-run single from Noah Rodriguez in the bottom of the eighth to close the scoring.
Zack Simon (4-2) secured the win for UNLV after throwing 6.1 innings and allowing five runs on six hits with four strikeouts.
Doyle Gehring (4-4) was saddled with the loss for Air Force after allowing five runs on five hits in two innings of work.
UP NEXT: UNLV will conclude its season Saturday at Earl E. Wilson Stadium with first pitch slated for 12:05 p.m. The Hustlin' Rebels will be honoring their 10 seniors with a Senior Day ceremony set to begin 20 minutes prior to first pitch.
