LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – In a game that featured a combined 31 shots, the UNLV women's soccer team's showdown vs. Hawai'i ended in a 1-1 draw Sunday afternoon at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
The Rebels (2-2-2) scored in the 23rd minute off a penalty kick drawn by sophomore
Mallie Ramirez that
Kitty Jones-Black, a native of Waianae, Hawai'i, successfully converted. The Rainbow Wahine (1-2-2 ), however, found the equalizer within the next minute after a tussle for an airborne ball resulted in their lone score.
In spite of the final score, the Rebels were replete with scoring chances within the final 10 minutes with three of their game-high eight shots on goal coming during that span. A pair of those attempts were launched In the 81st minute as freshman
Trinity Buchanan's back-to-back shots from the top of the box wound up forcing the UH goalkeeper to make a pair of difficult sliding saves.
The final opportunity came in the 88th minute when freshman
Cassie Villanueva slipped a pass toward the top left of the 18 for fellow freshman
Kam Jalayer, whose shot was parried by another miraculous diving save by the Rainbow Wahine keeper. A few moments later, UNLV junior goalkeeper
Lucia Guemes made a heroic save of her own in the 89th minute on a shot by UH's Brynn Mitchell that she poked away from just under the crossbar to preserve the tie.
