BOISE, Idaho (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's basketball team ended multiple streaks with a big 68-64 road win at Boise State Tuesday night.
With the victory, the Runnin' Rebels ended the Broncos' 22-game home win streak, which was the longest in the nation, ended their own eight game skid to Boise State and won at ExtraMile Arena for the first time in six tries.
Rob Whaley Jr. led UNLV (9-7, 2-2) in scoring with a career-high 18 points, while
Justin Webster added 15 and
Keylan Boone had 10.
Luis Rodriguez collected a season-high 12 rebounds.
Boise State (12-5, 3-1) was led by Tyson Degenhart's 24 points and O'Mar Stanley's 12 rebounds.
HOW IT ENDED: UNLV led 61-59 with a little more than a minute to play when Webster's jumper gave the Runnin' Rebels a four-point lead. After made free throws by both teams, Tyson Degenhart cut the lead to two points with a driving layup with 22 seconds to go. Webster was fouled on the inbound pass and made both free throws. Boise State's Max Rice made two free throws with eight seconds to go and Webster made another two foul shots with six seconds left for the final margin.
QUOTABLE: "It's just been one of those seasons so far, when whatever can go wrong has kind of found a way. But to see that ball go in, they deserve it. They deserve to have a big road victory, especially off the bounce-back from Saturday."
OTHER NOTES:
- Whaley Jr. hit his career high in points in the first half when he scored his 13th of the game with 5:44 to go until halftime.
- UNLV's last win in Boise was in 2019.
- UNLV committed just three turnovers in the first half and finished the game with nine.
- Whaley Jr. was 8 of 11 from the field and added six rebounds.
- UNLV shot 48.4% (15 of 31) in the first half, taking a 36-34 lead at the break.
- The Runnin' Rebels finished the game shooting 44.8% (26 of 58), while limiting Boise State to just 39.7% (23 of 58), including 6 of 21 on 3-pointers (28.6%).
- UNLV led by as many as 10 points in the first half.
- There were eight lead changes and three ties throughout the game.
- UNLV outscored Boise State in the paint, 34-26.
- UNLV has made at least one 3-pointer in a NCAA-record 1,209 straight games.
NEXT FOR THE RUNNIN' REBELS: UNLV will remain on the road this week and travel to Fort Collins, Colorado, to play at Colorado State on Friday, Jan. 19. The 8:30 p.m. MT/7:30 p.m. PT game will be televised nationally on FS1.
