LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV men's soccer team picked up its third straight shutout and extended its unbeaten streak to five matches after a 0-0 Senior Night draw vs. Grand Canyon in Sunday's WAC meeting at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
This is the second consecutive season the Rebels (4-6-4, 1-1-4) have strung together a five-game undefeated streak in league play. The result against the 'Lopes (5-6-3, 2-2-1) completed a pivotal four-point weekend for the Scarlet & Gray as they continue to vy for position among the top six teams in the WAC standings.
Backing the Scarlet & Gray's sixth clean sheet of the season, sophomore
Hugo Lemos reeled in his fifth shutout of the 2024 campaign after making three saves in the full 90 minutes. Together, Lemos and the Rebels' backline stretched their consecutive minutes without conceding a goal streak to 331 minutes.
In spite of the lack of scoring, the Rebel attack created near scoring opportunities as displayed by their four shots on goal. Two of those came within a two-minute span as sophomore Lucas Gelebart attempted a bicycle kick in the box off junior
Jonah Craig's 36th-minute free kick and LeBeuf headed a threatening shot off a cross in the 37th minute. Sophomore
Tyler Ware placed two shots of his own on frame in the 53rd and 55th minutes.
Prior to playing their last home match, seniors
James Anderson,
Lincoln Aquino,
Louis Hiepen,
Brophy Howard,
Nico Lopez, Theo Minard,
Gabe Sanchez and
Jimi Villasenor were recognized.
QUOTABLE: "I'm pleased with our performance because number one, we came away with a four-point weekend . And number two, the guys had another clean sheet. We want to be consistent in that and I thought we defended really well. That's five consecutive undefeated matches, so we're getting there. We've got to create more chances and then we'll be in a good spot. The game had ebbs and flows, Grand Canyon was very patient on the ball in the beginning, but then got more direct as the game wore on. It changed the way we had to play. I give credit to the guys because on the second game of the weekend they worked very hard. We had some good looks, although there weren't many for either team, but now we have to go on the road and get points."
"I'm really proud of the senior group leaving us next year. They've given us so much, and their families have as well, so that was special tonight to have everyone there."
- UNLV Head Coach BJ Craig
