Rebels Fall Short In Both Games On Day One Of Rebel Classic

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV softball team dropped both games on opening day of the Rebel Classic at Eller Media Stadium on Friday. The Rebels (5-5) took a 5-3 lead but were unable to sustain it as the Santa Clara Broncos (6-6) came back in the sixth inning to win 7-6. UNLV fought back from a 4-1 deficit in the fifth inning against Tulsa but could not surpass the Golden Hurricane and fell 4-3.

GAME 1: UNLV 6, SANTA CLARA 7

In the first game of the day for the Rebels it was a thriller. The Broncos took advantage of an UNLV error to score the first run of the day and take an early 1-0 lead. UNLV took no time answering back in the bottom of the second inning after Jessie Farrell led off the inning with a double to left field. Charelle Aki alertly took advantage of the Santa Clara error to advance to second base, which then scored Farrell to tie the game 1-all. Aki reignited the offense with a two-out single to left field in the bottom of the fourth inning. Alexys Herrera continued the rally with a bunt single. Marisa Bowman then had a quality at-bat to draw a walk. Maddie Schmidt had a big hit to bring home two Rebels with a double to center field. Jesse Farrell hit her first triple of the season in the bottom of the fifth to bring home Ariana Martinez after she got on base with a walk. Rylei Trujillo followed and smoked an RBI double into left field, marking her first hit of the season. The Rebels extended the lead to 5-3. Santa Clara fought back from a two-run deficit in the top of the sixth inning with three runs on three hits, making it 6-5. The Broncos tallied their last run of the game at the top of the seventh on three hits, making the score 7-5. UNLV gave one last push in their final three outs with Martinez starting things up again with a single to right field. Trejo then hit a deep fly ball to advance Martinez into scoring position. Farrell singled to left field to put the Rebels within one run. However, UNLV could not overcome the Broncos and came up short.

GAME 2: UNLV 3, TULSA 4
The Golden Hurricane took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on three hits. UNLV responded immediately to take one right back in the bottom of the inning. After Maddie Schmidt led off with a walk and was not quite done as she stole second. Janyssa Martin singled to left field, which advanced Schmidt to third. Ariana Martinez stepped up to the plate and smacked a sacrifice fly to bring Schmidt home. UNLV was shut down for the next three innings, with Tulsa scoring one run between each of the fourth and fifth innings. Janyssa Martin lit the spark for the Rebels after she was hit by a pitch to reach first base. Ariana Martinez blasted a two-run homer to bring the game within just one, 4-3. The Rebels gave a valuable effort to close the gap but were retired for the sixth and seventh innings.

UP NEXT: The Rebels will return to Eller Media Stadium for day two of the UNLV Rebel Classic on Saturday, February 24 at 3 p.m. playing Southern Utah for the first time this weekend and will close out the second day with a rematch against Santa Clara at 6 p.m.
