ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV women's basketball team secured a 62-56 win over New Mexico on Saturday night at The Pit. The Lady Rebels (19-2, 9-1 MW) and Lobos (16-7, 7-3 MW) split the series 1-and-1 this season.
Desi-Rae Young led the Lady Rebels with her 44th career double-double of 27 points and 10 rebounds (all defensive). Young was 11-for-19 from the field, a perfect 2-for-2 from behind the arc and 3-for-6 at the free throw line.
Nneka Obiazor was also in double-figures with 11 points and she brought down seven rebounds.
Alyssa Brown was the squad's leading rebounder with 11 boards (three offensive, eight defensive).
The Lobos had three players in double-digits and were led by Nyah Wilson with 25 points. Aniyah Augmon added 15 points, while Vianè Cumber had 12 points.
GAME OF RUNS: After the Lobos scored the first bucket of the game, the Lady Rebels put up 10 straight points to take a 10-2 lead. UNLV closed out the first quarter with an 11-6 lead. In the second quarter, another first basket by New Mexico cut the deficit to three, but a seven-point scoring run put UNLV up by double-digits, 18-8. The Lobos hit back-to-back three-pointers to head into half only down by five, 25-20. The third quarter got a little dicey as the Lobos tied it 31-all after answering a four-point Lady Rebels' scoring run with five points. New Mexico had another six consecutive points to take the lead 37-34, but four straight points with under a minute to go by the Lady Rebels gave them a one-point lead going into the final quarter, 40-39. The Lady Rebels and Lobos went back-and-forth for nearly half the fourth quarter, but four made free throws by the Lobos tied it 51-all. The Lady Rebels answered with seven straight points which included a beautiful steal and fast break layup by
Amarachi Kimpson and a huge three-point play by Young. New Mexico was able to cut the advantage to four twice within the last minute of play, but
Ashley Scogging put up a layup and helped secure the road victory.
OTHER NOTES:
- The Lady Rebels out-rebounded the Lobos 43-36.
- There were three lead changes throughout and UNLV and New Mexico were tied four times.
- The Lady Rebels' bench out-scored the Lobos' bench 8-0.
- UNLV dished 15 assists and were led by Kiara Jackson who had seven assists.
- New Mexico had 38 paint points compared to UNLV's 26 paint points.
- The Lady Rebels held the Lobos to only four made three-points (4 of 19).
