LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV softball team took game one of the three-game Mountain West series over Utah State, 7-3, on Thursday night at Eller Media Stadium. This is the second weekend in a row the Rebels have opened the series with a win.
The Rebels (19-10, 4-2) fell behind in the top of the first inning 1-0 to the Aggies (19-13, 3-4), but a five-run inning in the bottom of the third gave UNLV the lead and they never looked back. UNLV scored seven runs on nine hits.
Alanna Thiede earned the win for the Scarlet & Gray notching her 12th win of the season and
Ellie Zellien came in to earn her first save of the season.
BIG THIRD INNING: Although the Rebels were behind 1-0 after the first two innings, UNLV just started to heat up.
Jesse Farrell sent the first pitch she saw over the left field wall to get the Rebels right back in it, 1-1. The hits kept rolling as
Maddie Schmidt and
Alyssa Trejo each hit singles to give UNLV two runners on with one out.
Sofia Morales then stepped into the box and roped her first triple of the season, which brought two runs in to give the Rebels a 3-1 lead. UNLV then took advantage of a Utah State error which brought in another run.
Skyler Shaw smacked a single to left, which drove in
Kelsie Kelso to add to the lead and made it 5-1. The Rebels never lost the lead after the third and tallied to more runs in the bottom of the sixth to secure the win.
OTHER NOTES:
- Head coach Kristie Fox earned her 200th win at the helm of the Rebels' program. Fox is now only the second head coach in program history to reach the 200 win mark. Shan McDonald (1987-03 with 511 wins) was the only head coach to reach 200 or more wins as the Rebels coach.
- Skyler Shaw was on fire at the plate going 3-for-3 including an RBI and scored one run. Shaw's three hits tied her career-high.
- Sophia Morales was solid in the box going 2-for-2 including her first triple of the season, two RBI and scored a run. Morales' two RBI tied her career-high.
- Jesse Farrell has extended her on-base and hitting streak to 11 straight games.
- Ariana Martinez is now on a 26-game reached base streak.
- This is the first time this season the Rebels have hit two triples in a game.
- UNLV out-hit Utah State 9-7.
