Softball Collects 4-0 Win Over USD In San Diego Tournament Finale

UNLV collected its third shutout of the season and went 3-2 for the weekend

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV softball team collected a 4-0 over San Diego on Sunday afternoon in the final day of the San Diego Tournament at USD Softball Complex. The game came to a halt after the fifth inning due to rain.

The Rebels (10-8) and Toreros (5-15) were scoreless for the first two innings until UNLV got things going in the third. Bri Williams led off the top of the third inning with a walk on five pitches. Lorenzza Marcacci dropped down a beautiful bunt to advance Williams to second. Maddie Schmidt stepped to the plate and after one pitch, she poked a single to right field to give the Rebels runners on first and third. Alyssa Trejo then roped a fly ball to right and the wind was on the Rebels' side as the Torero's made an error on the play, which brought in Williams and Schmidt to make it 2-0. The Toreros tried to piece things together in the bottom of the inning, but Alanna Thiede and the defense shut it down.

The fourth was scoreless on both sides and the Rebels tallied two more in the top of the fifth. With one out, Maddie Schmidt hit a double to left field to start a rally. Schmidt was a heads up on the base path and reached third on a San Diego passed ball. Alyssa Trejo then drew a walk and Alexys Herrera traded places with Trejo. On the next pitch, Herrera took off to second to give UNLV two runners in scoring position. Janyssa Martin put down a sac bunt on the first base line to score Schmidt, 3-0. Kelsie Kelso then came up to the plate and on a 1-2 count, she smacked a single down the right field line to bring Herrera across the plate, 4-0. After a San Diego pitching change, UNLV then got another base runner, but a ground ball ended the top half of the inning. Alanna Thiede and the Rebels then went three and three down to close out the fifth.

As the sixth inning started, four different Rebels faced San Diego's Courtney Rose in the circle before the umpires called the game due to the rain coming down. With the sixth inning not fully completed, no runs or statistics will count towards either team.
