LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV women's soccer cruised to a 3-1 season-opening win over Southern Utah Thursday night at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
The Rebels (1-0) scored the first three goals of the match against the Thunderbirds (0-1) behind a brace from sophomore
Trinity Buchanan and a goal from junior
Cadence Whitley.
Buchanan opened the scoring with a 22-yard heave set up by
Mimi Mendoza in the 16th minute and later successfully converted a penalty kick in the 76th minute. Whitley cashed in her goal from the left side of the box off the assist by sophomore
Cassie Villanueva in the 51st minute.
The three goals provided the Scarlet & Gray a cushion against a late SUU goal in the 82nd minute.
In goal for the Rebels, senior
Lucia Guemes and junior
Hanne Breur combined for seven saves as they helped the Rebels' backline deter 18 total shots on the evening. Guemes recorded four of those, while Breur grabbed three of her own.
