COLUMBUS, Ohio (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV men's soccer found a second-half equalizer, but ultimately fell in its opening Wolstein Classic match to Dayton, 3-1, on a pair of late goals Thursday night at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The weekend classic is being hosted by Ohio State.
Just 46 seconds into the second half, the Rebels (1-1) evened the score, 1-1, on freshman
Yuto Oketani's score after a deep ball delivery from UNLV's defensive third by
Santi Hanus and
Mikah Madrid into the Flyers' (2-1) own box. It was Oketani's first career collegiate goal.
During the contest, UNLV survived an onslaught of Dayton shots as sophomore goalkeeper
Hugo Lemos racked up six saves after facing 18 overall targets. The Rebels closed the shot gap in the second half as they were just one off from the Flyers' total with seven shot attempts in the final 45 minutes.
In spite of the Scarlet & Gray's early second-half rally, defending Atlantic 10 Champion Dayton went on to score the deciding pair of goals in the 81st and 82nd minutes.
UP NEXT: The Rebels will face another test Sunday against host and No. 20 Ohio State at 4 p.m. PT/7 p.m. ET to close the Wolstein Classic.
