Lady Rebels Win 72-71 In OT Thriller Against Wyoming

UNLV extends its winning streak to eight straight games and are 7-0 in Mountain West play

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV Lady Rebels come away with their seventh straight win over a Mountain West opponent after forcing overtime and defeating Wyoming 72-71 on Sunday afternoon at Cox Pavilion. The Scarlet & Gray (15-4, 7-0 MW) have now won the last six meetings over the Cowgirls, including two overtime victories.

Three Lady Rebels scored in double-figures and were led by Amarachi Kimpson's 22 points. Kimpson shot 8-for-12 from the field and did not miss a free throw (6 of 6). McKinna Brackens put up 14 points, which included the game-winning bucket in overtime against the Cowgirls. Aaliyah Alexander scored 12 points and brought down a season-high seven rebounds of which four were offensive. Alyssa Brown was the leading rebounder for UNLV with 13 boards, and Kiara Jackson led the squad in assists with four, which includes her pass to Brackens for the game-winning basket.

The Cowgirls (10-8, 4-2 MW) also had three players in double-digits and were led by Allyson Fertig's 22 points. Emily Mellema and Malene Pedersen each had 16 points apiece. Fertig was also the leading rebounder for Wyoming with nine, while Mellema led them in assists with six.

OT THRILLER: With 0:21 seconds left to play Tess Barnes of Wyoming, made one of two free throws to put the Cowgirls up by a basket, 67-65. Kiara Jackson then drove from the top of the key, down the right side, and banked a layup with 0:14 seconds left to play to tie the game 67-all. Wyoming then collected the defensive rebound on a missed three-pointer by UNLV to head into overtime. UNLV won the jump ball in the extra quarter and made the first basket to go up by two, 69-67. Aaliyah Alexander sank a free throw to give the Lady Rebels a three-point lead. Fertig of Wyoming cut the deficit back to one, then the Cowgirls took the lead 71-70, on a Pedersen layup. After blocked shots by each squad, Jackson drove through the lane and then passed to a wide-open Brackens on the right side of the paint. Brackens then went straight up to put the layup in and give the Lady Rebels a 72-71 lead. The Cowgirls tried to sink their own layup with one second left, but a defensive rebound by Brown called the game.
