Rebels Fall In Tight Battle To Lopes

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) -  The UNLV volleyball team was on the wrong end of a 3-1 decision to the Grand Canyon Lopes Saturday in Mountain West action at the Cox Pavilion. The Rebels (8-7, 2-3 MW) fell behind 2-0 after the first two sets, but came out of the intermission a different team. The Scarlet & Gray won the third set to cut into the Lopes (9-7, 1-4 MW) lead; however, the visitors closed by hitting .294 in the fourth and final set. GCU claimed the bout behind sets scores of 25-17, 25-20, 23-25, 25-23.

The Lopes outhit UNLV by 74 points (.324 to .250), but the Scarlet & Gray claimed one more kill (58-57) and two more attack attempts (144-142). UNLV's attackers committed 11 more attack errors (22-11). GCU hit .290 or better in all four sets, including its best display, a .395 hitting efficiency (13-0-33) in the second. UNLV, on the other hand, topped out at a match-best .324 clip in the third set that consisted of 18 kills against five errors in 42 swings. The Rebels hit .294 in the fourth and final frame, but was hindered by .059 in the first set.

Defensively, UNLV had 10 more digs (62-52), but was out blocked by GCU 22.0 to 4.0. The former had one solo block and three block assisted putbacks compared to the latter's two solo and 20 assisted stuffs.

Jaida Harris had a team-high 13 kills on three digs and one assist, while Basia Latos (12 kills, three digs) and Brooklynn Williams (10 kills, one block assist). Libero Caleigh King posted 22 digs to reach 807 career digs and is 33 digs away from joining the program's top ten career digs list. Agata Makowska posted a career-high 25 assists along with six digs.
