Softball Run Rules Monmouth 8-0 On Final Day Of Rebel Classic

Amelia Weber held Monmouth to only one hit through five innings of play

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Amelia Weber and the UNLV Softball team earned a five-inning 8-0 run rule victory over Monmouth in the Rebel Classic finale on Sunday afternoon at Eller Media Stadium. The Rebels (7-2) went undefeated, 4-0, over the weekend against Idaho State and Monmouth.
 
Weber only allowed one hit, which came in the fourth inning against the Hawks (0-10) and chalked up four strikeouts for her second victory of the season. UNLV out-hit Monmouth 11-1 and scored in three of the five innings played including a four-run second inning.

HOW IT WENT DOWN: Ariana Martinez led off the bottom of the first inning with a beauty of a full count home run right over the center field wall to give UNLV a 1-0 lead. In the top of the second inning, the Hawks were retired in order by Weber which included two hard-hit line outs and a strikeout looking. The Rebels came back to the plate in the bottom of the second inning and scored four runs on six hits. In the top of the third, after a walk, the Rebels retired the next three Hawks in order to continue to stay ahead 5-0. The bottom of the third and fourth for the Scarlet & Gray were scoreless. In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Rebels were able to get a two-out rally going. With two outs, Charelle Aki drew a walk. Maggie Vasa then hit an infield single to the left side of the field, giving UNLV runners on first and second. Bri Williams sent one right back up the middle that scored a run to go up 6-0. Maddie Scott came up to the plate and drew a walk, loading the bases. With a 1-0 count, Martinez smacked a double off the left center wall bringing around two runs to make it 8-0 and then ball game was called.

 
OTHER NOTES:
  • Martinez was 3-for-4 on the day including four RBI, a home run and a double against the Hawks. She has now extended her hitting and reached base streaks to nine straight games.
  • Sofia Morales, Maggie Vasa and Bri Williams were all 2-for-3 against Monmouth.
  • Vasa had one RBI and scored two runs.
  • Williams had two RBI and also scored two runs for the Rebels. Williams is now on a seven-game reached base streak
  • Morales has now extended her hitting and reached base streak to nine straight games.
  • Karmyna Becerra had one walk on the day, which extended her reached base streak to nine games.
 
UP NEXT: The Rebels will hit the road for their next tournament, going to South Carolina for the Garnet & Black Invitational. UNLV will join Boston, Fordham and the Gamecocks for a five-game weekend. The Scarlet & Gray will open the Garnet & Black Invitational on Friday, Feb. 21 at 9 a.m. PT/12 p.m. ET against Boston.
