LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV women's basketball team earned its eighth straight win after collecting an 89-5 victory over San Jose State on Saturday afternoon in a packed Cox Pavilion. Following the game, the Lady Rebels honored senior
Alyssa Brown,
Kiara Jackson,
Macie James and
Kenadee Winfrey.
The Scarlet & Gray (24-5, 16-1 MW) had four players in double-figures and were led by
Meadow Roland's career-high 24 points. Roland shot 8-for-11 from the field and was a perfect 8-for-8 at the free throw line.
McKinna Brackens and
Kiara Jackson each had 15 points on the day. Jackson led the squad in assists with six, while
Alyssa Brown led the squad in rebounds with 13, respectively.
Amarachi Kimpson had 10 points against the Spartans and two steals.
The Spartans (10-20, 3-14 MW) were led by Amiah Simmons who had 24 points and Rylei Waugh who had 10 points. Djessira Diawara was the leading rebounder for San Jose State with eight.
TURNING POINT: After falling behind by three points at the end of the first quarter, the Lady Rebels were ready to turn it up a notch. UNLV went on an 11-point scoring run to go ahead by six, 32-26 in the second quarter. The Spartans cut the deficit by a three-pointer, but eight straight points for the Lady Rebels put them up by double-digits at 40-29. UNLV went into the break scoring four straight free throws to hold the 11-point lead, 44-33. Following the break, the Scarlet & Gray did not let off the gas and continued the scoring with another 11 consecutive points to make it 55-33. The Lady Rebels did not lose sight of the double-digit lead the rest of the contest.
OTHER NOTES:
- Macie James tied her career-high in assists with four.
- UNLV had its best free throw shooting game going 24-for-25 (96.0%).
- The Lady Rebels dominated the paint scoring 48 points compared to the Spartans 18 paint points
- UNLV's bench out-scored SJSU's bench 34-4.
- The Lady Rebels won the rebounding battle 47-38.
- UNLV forced 19 San Jose State turnovers and scored 21 points off of them.
