ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (UNLVrebels.com) – The UNLV baseball team (11-6, 0-1 MW) kicked off their Mountain West schedule with the first of three games against New Mexico (9-9, 1-0 MW) on Friday night, traveling out east for the weekend. Both team's bats ran hot during the contest, but the Lobos emerged as the victors on a 12-6 final score.
Dean Toigo and Gunar Myro led the charge for the Hustlin' Rebels on the bat, both of them hitting a solo home run during the contest for two of the team's runs. Toigo also was able to hit a one-out double in the first inning, pushing
Cooper Sheff to third base and ready to score on
Cole Koniarsky's sacrifice fly. Myro's long ball in the series of scoring in the top of the sixth inning, both UNLV long balls exiting through right field.
Koniarsky held a team-high three hits on the day for the Scarlet & Gray, picking up two doubles and the team's lone stolen base. Five different Rebels were credited an RBI in the match,
JP Hefft heading the lineup with two of his own off of a two out, two-RBI double in the top of the sixth inning.
Chase Gallegos was able to catch a baserunner stealing in the bottom of the second inning, clearing the bases for starting pitcher
Carson Lane for the second out off the inning.
Lane pitched 4.2 innings for the Hustlin' Rebels on Friday night, picking up three strikeouts and allowing two walks during his tenure. Lane would face 28 batters before
Will Marquart would relieve him, tossing the rest of the contest for 3.1 innings total. Marquart tallied two strikeouts of his own during his outing.
"New Mexico had three big innings, we only had one. It's hard to overcome that" stated head coach
Stan Stolte. "Toigo swung the bat well and Marquart did a great job out of the pen. We just didn't do enough."
