Hustlin’ Rebels Suffer Loss To New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (UNLVrebels.com) – The UNLV baseball team (11-7, 0-2 MW) faced off against New Mexico (10-9, 2-0 MW) on Saturday afternoon, competing in the second of three games between the two programs this weekend. The Lobos' offense didn't falter against the Rebels, UNLV falling on a score of 13-3 after eight innings.

Cooper Sheff and Dean Toigo both earned a pair of hits in the Saturday showdown, helping the Hustlin' Rebels pressure early in the scoring column. The Scarlet & Gray took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning; Sheff reaching third base and Cole Koniarsky's sacrifice fly driving him home. The team would later produce two runs in the third inning, JP Hefft and Cooper Sheff hitting back-to-back doubles with Toigo pushing Sheff home on an RBI-single.

Three more batters would earn hits throughout the lineup, including Chase Gallegos, Dwight Allen II and Chase Ditmar. Allen II's hit was the third and final multi-base hit the Rebels earned in the game, punching a double in the top of the sixth inning.

LJ Mercurius started on the mound for UNLV, pitching 2.1 innings. Reese Lueck stepped in for relief for the most innings of any Rebel on the day, throwing 3.2 before Ross Fowler closed the rest of the game for 1.2 innings of work.

"You can't hit two guys and walk another nine in an extremely offensive ballpark and against a very offensive team" mentioned head coach Stan Stolte. "You don't have a chance with that. It was painful to watch."

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Rebels' nine walks and two hit-by-pitches is the fourth time this season the team has given up double-digit free bags in a game.
- Hefft's previously-mentioned double extends his hit-streak to the past 12 games after Saturday night.
