Late Rally Overpowers Hustlin’ Rebels

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (UNLVrebels.com) – The UNLV baseball team (11-8, 0-3 MW) competed in the series finale against New Mexico (11-9, 3-0 MW) on Sunday afternoon, the last game of the weekend before traveling back west. The game was back-and-forth for the two programs, but the Lobos earned the final blow on the 11-8 final score.

The Rebels' bats were hot in the first inning of action, JP Hefft and Dean Toigo and Cole Koniarsky opening the first inning with singles. Brendan O'Sullivan would drive in the games' first run, shooting an RBI-double to left field for an early lead. After the Lobos secured the lead shortly after, the two teams would trade scoreless innings until the top of the fifth.

The Hustlin' Rebels would tally seven runs across the fifth and sixth innings, O'Sullivan earning another RBI off the sacrifice line-drive and Dwight Allen II's fly ball to left field driving in Toigo and Gunnar Myro. The first baseman would collect his fourth RBI of the day in the top of the sixth, O'Sullivan hitting a double to right-center field and driving in two runs. Myro brought in Sully later with an RBI-single of his own, the Hustlin' Rebels later scoring in the inning with a bases-loaded fielder's choice.

UNLV's offense would be stuck on 1-2-3 innings through the eighth and ninth frames, New Mexico cutting the Rebel lead to two runs in the eighth inning. The Lobos tallied five runs in the bottom of the ninth to seal the victory from the Scarlet & Gray.

"A really tough one to lose" mentioned head coach Stan Stolte. "We're proud of the guys. We did so many things better today, but not quite enough to win the game."
