Softball Falls In Rubber Match Against Colorado State

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV softball team came up short, 3-1, in the rubber match against Colorado State on Sunday at Ram Field during the opening weekend of Mountain West play.
 
The Rebels (16-11, 1-2 MW) and Rams (11-15, 2-1 MW) were tied after the first inning and were both held off the board for the next five, until CSU hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh. The Scarlet & Gray was led by Karmyna Becerra at the plate going 2-for-4. Ariana Martinez hit her eighth homer of the season and scored the only run for UNLV.
 
HOW IT WENT DOWN: In the top of the first inning, Ariana Martinez led off with a homer over the right center wall to give UNLV an early 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the first inning, the Rams tied it up on an infield single, 1-all. The next five innings both sides were held off the board. In the top of the final frame, the Rebels were retired in order on two fly balls to the outfield and a hard-hit ground ball to the left side. The Rams walked it off in the bottom of the seventh inning with a two-run home run.

NEXT UP: The Scarlet & Gray will play a mid-week non-conference contest on Tuesday, March 18 visiting Arizona State at 4 p.m.
