SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV softball team closed out the UC Santa Barbara Tournament with a 12-2 run-rule victory over the Gauchos on Sunday afternoon at Campus Diamond. The Rebels (13-6) went 4-1 over the weekend.
UNLV tallied six hits by six different Rebels, while
Jesse Farrell,
Brooke Pisciotta and
Bri Williams each had two RBI.
Yanina Sherwood collected her fifth win of the season pitching 5.0 innings, striking out four and allowed five hits. The Rebels drew nine walks on the day and collected nine RBI.
HOW IT WENT DOWN:
Ariana Martinez got things going in the top of the first inning drawing a seven-pitch walk.
Sofia Morales ran all the way through first and was safe at first on a pop fly to short that was dropped by the Gauchos. With one out, and runners on first and second,
Destinee Noury singled through the left side to load the bases.
Jesse Farrell then drew a five-pitch walk that brought in a run to give the Rebels an early 1-0 lead.
Bri Williams hit a sac fly into right center bringing in another run and made it 2-0.
Bri Hamilton also walked to load the bases, now with two outs.
Brooke Pisciotta roped a single to center and two runs crossed the plate to make it 4-0.
Maddie Scott was at the plate with a 2-2 count and smacked a bases-clearing triple to right center, 7-0. In the bottom of the first, UCSB scored a run on a single up the middle, 7-1. The second was scoreless by both sides and the Rebels came back to the plate in the top of the third and tacked on five more runs to go ahead 12-1. Both squads were held off the board in the fourth and the Rebels were unable to score in the top of the fifth. In the bottom half of the fifth, the Gauchos led off with a single through the left side. The Scarlet & Gray then rolled a double-play to clear the bases. After UCSB was hit by a pitch, the Gauchos doubled scoring the run, 12-2.
Yanina Sherwood sat down the final out with a strikeout swinging to run rule UCSB.
OTHER NOTES:
- Karmyna Becerra, Ariana Martinez and Destinee Noury all each had one RBI for the Rebels against the Gauchos.
- Becerra and Martinez also each drew two walks.
- For the weekend, Martinez led the squad with a .556 (10-for-18) batting average, which included a double, two home runs and six RBI. She also had three walks on the weekend.
- Martinez had a .944 slugging percentage and a .619 on-base percentage.
- For the weekend, through three appearances Amelia Weber went 3-0 through 16.2 innings of work. She struck out 14 hitters and only walked two.
- For the weekend, through three appearances, Yanina Sherwood went 1-1 through 15.2 innings of work and struck out 16.
- Martinez has reached base in every game thus far this season and is currently on a five-game hitting streak.
- Williams has reached base in 16 straight games.
- Becerra is on a nine-game reached base streak.
UP NEXT: The Rebels will close out the non-conference slate at the GCU Tournament from March 7 - March 9 in Phoenix, Ariz. UNLV joins San Diego, Saint Joseph's, UPenn and the host Lopes for a five-game weekend.
