LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The Hustlin' Rebels (22-20, 8-12 MW) wasted no time locking up a series win over San Diego State (15-29, 10-10 MW) on Saturday night, exploding offensively to cruise to a 13-2 seven-inning run-rule victory at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
HOW IT WENT DOWN: After taking the series opener on Friday, the Rebels left no doubt in game two, scoring in every inning except the sixth to bury the Aztecs and secure their second straight Mountain West series win. UNLV pounded out 19 hits led by lead off man Dean Toigo, who went 4-for-5 with five RBI, including a momentum-shifting three-run double in the third inning that broke the game wide open. Elijah Rodriguez chipped in a 3-for-5 day with two RBI, while Cooper Sheff went 3-for-4 and scored three times. San Diego State jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI single by Nevan Noonan, but UNLV immediately responded with two runs in the bottom half and never looked back. The Hustlin' Rebels added two more in the second and erupted for four in the third, capped by Toigo's clutch bases-clearing double. Rebel starter Reese Lueck settled in after a rocky start, tossing five innings while allowing just two runs before handing things over to Michael Taylor in the sixth. The Aztecs, who tallied only five hits, failed to score after the second inning. UNLV added three runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth to invoke the run-rule mercy rule, ending the game after seven innings. The Aztecs were held scoreless over their final five frames, managing just two hits during that stretch.
