LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV Track & Field team will look to carry their momentum from the outdoor season into the final stretch of the academic year, competing in the Credit 1 Union Mountain West Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Clovis, Calif., hosted by Fresno State. The conference championships will kick off on Thursday, May 15 through Saturday, May 17.
Individually, the Rebels will have a majority of their roster traveling competing in multiple events over the course of the weekend. 18 members of the Scarlet & Gray set to compete and the group will also take part in the 4x100m and 4x400m relays during the meet.
Senior Kennedi Porter aims to lead UNLV in the lanes, currently ranked first in the 200m (23.04) and second in the 100m (11.56) heading into the weekend. She'll be backed up by a slew of sprinters, including senior Jaydea Carter right behind her at the third-place rankings in the 100m hurdles (13.38). Carter also sits seventh in the 200m (23.62), while Gabriella Caldwell will aim to jump into the conference's top-eight spots as she doubles up in the women's 100m (11.86) and 200m (24.43) events, currently slotted 16th in the former and 19th in the latter. Jayda Bushay, Sadia Green, Malika Mashack, Kaelin Gowdy, AnnaKay Maitland and Chinyere Okoro round out the Rebel sprinters competing this week.
The Rebels will aim to have a couple more members of their distance squad finish within the meet's top-eight competitors. Natalia Ruiz sits 25th in the 1500m (4:28.43), while Claire Rands and Leah Okuda will round out the distance squad.Â
After picking up a bronze medal in the high jump at last year's outdoor championships, Grace Cunningham will aim for another medal at the upcoming outdoor championships as she currently is tied for the second best mark this season at 1.79m, (5' 10.5"). Freshman Juliana Roberson will represent the program as the lone Rebel in the women's long jump and triple jump events. Roberson is currently ranked sixth in the triple jump with a mark of 12.39m (40' 7.75").
UNLV's field event entries will also showcase some of the Rebels' premier talents in the throws department in Krishna Jayasankar, Lauruyn Williams, Roxene Simpson and Sophia Clark all entering into the weekend in at least one event. Both Jayasankar and Simpson will enter the meet ranked within the event's top-eight entries after the former pushed into the top-five UNLV all-time rankings in the discus (51.65m, 169' 5") and shot put (15.87m, 52' 1"). Williams and Clark will aim to post strong distances for the Rebels in the hammer and discus, respectively.
