LA JOLLA, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV women's soccer responded twice to UC San Diego goals before ultimately dropping its Sunday afternoon battle, 3-2, at Triton Soccer Stadium.
Tying things up for the Rebels (0-2-1) were senior midfielder
Elisa Corvalan in the 14th minute on a header following senior captain
Torie Reardon's corner kick and junior forward
Cassie Villanueva's 50th-minute score assisted by junior midfielder
Tania Tapia and senior forward
Cadence Whitley. Over the next 28 minutes, the contest remained even at 2-2 until the Tritons (1-1-1) netted the decisive goal in the 79th minute.
Corvalan and Villanueva, whose shot on goal set up the corner on the squad's first goal, came away with their first goals of the season. It also marked Corvalan's first time finding the net in a Rebel kit.
In a back-and-forth tussle, the Rebels finished with equal time of possession as UCSD and nearly even on shots with their 14 attempts falling just shy of the Tritons' 15. Three of those were near scoring chances in the box on junior forward
Alyssa White's 27th-minute shot, freshman midfielder
Scarlette Druian's 29th-minute attempt and sophomore midfielder
Mauri Ashman's 86th-minute chance.
