Rebels Unable To Find Third Response As Cowgirls Pull Away Late

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV women's soccer (3-7-3, 1-3-1 MW) team tied things up twice, but ultimately was unable to find a third equalizer in a 4-2 loss to Wyoming (10-3-0, 3-1-0 MW) in Sunday afternoon's Senior Day showdown and Pink Game at Peter Johann Memorial Field.

In response to Wyoming's first-half goals, junior captain Macee McKenna tapped in the 1-1 equalizer in the 14th minute and fifth-year forward Kaitlin Taylor brought the Rebels even with the visitor at 2-2 on a 53rd-minute header. The Cowgirls, however, pulled away with unanswered goals in the 59th minute and 73rd minute (Penalty Kick) as Brooke Brown netted a hat trick.

STAT OF THE GAME: The Rebels finished even with Wyoming in shots on goal at seven each in live game play, but a penalty kick for Wyoming's last goal gave it the final edge over the Scarlet & Gray by an 8-7 tally. Leading the way for UNLV, Taylor launched a majority of those a season-high five shots on target, but four wound up in the Cowgirl goalkeeper's gloves.

Taylor came away with her sixth goal of the year in the contest on junior midfielder Tori Martinez's free kick to the far post and McKenna tallied her third of the year on a volley into the box by junior forward Felicity Garcia.

UP NEXT: UNLV takes to the road for its next two matches starting with a 6 p.m. contest Thursday, Oct. 14, at UC Davis.

NOTES:
  • As part of Senior Day, UNLV recognized seniors Kaitlin Taylor, Elizabeth Bautista, Skylar Cano and Morgan Kaiser in a pregame ceremony.
  • Taylor extended her lead on the Rebels' points chart with 15 as she ended her previous four-game goal-scoring drought entering the weekend.
  • Additionally, McKenna found the back of the net for the second time in her last two outings.
  • This was the sixth time UNLV has scored two or more goals in a match this season, suffering only its second loss in such games.
  • In spite of the defeat, the Scarlet & Gray attack has continued to show the propensity to score, averaging 2.5 goals across the past two matches.
