Rebels Drop Leadoff Classic Finale Against Purdue

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV softball team dropped 15-1 in five innings against Purdue in the UNLV Leadoff Classic finale on Sunday afternoon at Eller Media Stadium.
 
The Rebels (1-4) were led at the plate by Presley Barnes and Keyannah Chavez, each collecting a hit against the Boilermakers. Barnes had the squad's lone RBI of the game.
 
HOW IT WENT DOWN: Purdue went ahead in the top of the first inning 4-0 on three hits and one UNLV error. In the top of the second inning, the Boilermakers tallied four more runs on a grand slam to take a 8-0 lead. The third inning was scoreless by both squads, but in the top of the fourth Purdue added one more and made it 9-0. Keyannah Chavez doubled to left center to give UNLV a base runner in the bottom of the fourth inning with one out. Charelle Aki then took advantage of a Purdue error to give UNLV two base runners. Presley Barnes roped an RBI single to right center and made it 9-1. In the top of the fifth inning, Purdue scored six runs on four hits and took advantage of a Rebels' error, 15-1. The Rebels were retired in order in the bottom half of the fifth.
 
OTHER NOTES:
  • For the weekend, Barnes was 4-for-9 which included a home run and three RBI.
  • Keyannah Chavez was 4-for-11 on the weekend, which included two doubles, three RBI and two walks.
  • Natalie Turner had four hits through the Leadoff Classic.
  • During the weekend, UNLV had five home runs from five different Rebels.
  • Lauren Fettic collected her first career victory during the Leadoff Classic.
UP NEXT: UNLV will stay in Las Vegas for the second weekend of the season, hosting the UNLV Desert Classic on Friday, Feb. 13 - Sunday, Feb. 15. The Scarlet & Gray will welcome UC Davis, Seattle U and Quinnipiac.
