Rebels Run-Rule Colorado State In Game Two And Collect Series

UNLV scored in all five innings played including a three-run third inning

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV softball team earned an 8-0 run-rule victory in five innings in walk-off fashion against Colorado State in game two of the three-game Mountain West series on Friday afternoon at Eller Media Stadium. The Rebels (20-17, 7-4) collected the series against the Rams (17-19, 5-6) after winning both games.
 
The Scarlet & Gray headed into the bottom of the fifth inning up 7-0 and only needed one more run to run-rule the Rams. Bri Williams then roped a double with a runner in scoring position to propel UNLV to victory. Keyannah Chavez continues to stay hot at the plate going 3-for-3 on the day including a team-high two RBI. Natalie Turner's bat also is still hot as she went 2-for-2 with a run scored. Lyla Gonzalez was also 2-for-2 on the day with an RBI and crossed the plate once. Yanina Sherwood pitched all five innings for her seventh win of the season. Sherwood also collected her first shutout so far.
  
HOW IT WENT DOWN: UNLV jumped out front in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single by Keyannah Chavez 1-0. In the bottom of the second inning, the Rebels had runners on the corners and a sacrifice fly to right field by Lyla Gonzalez scored a run to give UNLV a 2-0 lead. The Rebels tallied three more runs on three hits and a Colorado State error in the bottom of the third and made it 5-0. In the bottom of the fourth, the Scarlet & Gray picked up two more runs after an error by the Rams and another RBI single by Chavez, 7-0. In the bottom of the fifth inning with one out, Gonzalez roped an infield single to the left side. Hailey Gilbertson then traded places with Gonzalez as a pinch runner and stole second. With a 2-1 count, Bri WIlliams smacked a double to center bringing Gilbertson home and made it 8-0 for the run–rule victory.
 
OTHER NOTES
  • Williams was 2-for-4 against the Rams including an RBI and scored a run. She has now reached base in 25 straight games.
  • Diamond Sefe drew two walks on the day and had an RBI.
  • The Rebels out-hit the Rams again 12-4.
  • Sherwood pitched five shutout innings, only allowed four hits, three walks and struck out three Rams.
  • Charelle Aki, Mantha Hatzenbeller and Rachel Cook all had one hit against Colorado State.
  • Chavez is now on an eight-game hitting and on-base streak.
  • Aki is on a six-game hitting streak and has reached base in 12 consecutive games.
  • Turner is also on a 12 game on-base streak.
 
UP NEXT: The Rebels and Rams will close out the three-game series on Saturday, April 4 at 12 p.m. at Eller Media Stadium.
