LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – Longtime UNLV baseball head coach
Stan Stolte announced his retirement from the university on Saturday.
Stolte, 64, was named the seventh head coach in UNLV baseball history on June 1, 2016, six months after he had been tabbed as the interim head coach in December 2015. This past season marked his 16th overall with the team as he originally joined the program as associate head coach in 2010.
Named the 2022 Mountain West Coach of the Year after leading the Hustlin' Rebels to the regular-season championship that spring, his final record as head coach of the Scarlet & Gray is 278-271, including 30-25 this season. Those 278 career wins rank second in school history behind only the legendary Fred Dallimore.
"I am thankful for so many people – too many to mention here by name – during the past 16 years that I had the pleasure of working with at UNLV," said Stolte. "I put every ounce of energy I could into the kids daily, holding them accountable, knowing right from wrong, developing them on the field and trying to win as many baseball games as we could along the way. It's just time. The new system of how to build championship-quality programs with the portal and everything else makes it tougher to also build lifelong lasting relationships with kids, which is the number one reason I got into this business. I have zero regrets and will always support the Rebels in all sports."
Since joining the collegiate coaching ranks in 1987 at Northwest Missouri State, Stolte coached 116 players that signed professional contracts, including 18 that made their way to the Major Leagues. There are currently four Hustlin' Rebel alumni under Stolte's tenure that play in the big leagues; Erick Fedde (White Sox), Dean Kremer (Orioles), Bryson Stott (Phillies) and Kyle Isbel (Royals).
In the past seven years, the Rebels have had a total of 16 players drafted. Additionally, Stolte developed 22 All-Americans and five conference pitchers of the year, including Rebel alums Fedde (2014), Buddy Borden (2013) and Tanner Peters (2011), and mentored Stott and
Dean Toigo (2025) to Mountain West Tony Gwynn Co-Player of the Year honors.
"
Stan Stolte has been a tremendous representative of UNLV baseball on the diamond and in the Las Vegas community and we thank him for his many years leading our student-athletes," said Director of Athletics
Erick Harper. "He's both a respected baseball man and a great person. We will now begin a national search to find the next head coach of the Hustlin' Rebels."
