LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV football on Monday unveiled a special helmet design it will wear for its Homecoming game vs. North Dakota State on October 10.
 
The white helmet with a red facemask will feature a red decal using the same distinct mid-1970s font spelling out UNLV REBELS flanked by an image of the famous Minute Man Statue located in Concord, Massachusetts.
 
The patriotic look is in honor of the UNLV helmet that was worn only during the 1976 season while the nation celebrated its Bicentennial. The 1976 Rebels were quarterbacked by UNLV Hall of Famer Glenn Carano, who led his team to a 9-3 record that included a NCAA Division II playoff appearance.
 
Dan Mullen's squad will wear the helmet for one game to commemorate the 50th anniversary of that 1976 team while also celebrating our nation's semiquincentennial.
 
Carano, who remains UNLV's all-time winningest quarterback, served as the keynote speaker at Monday's Inaugural Governor's Dinner at Allegiant Stadium and was presented the prototype of the helmet by UNLV Director of Athletics Erick Harper in appreciation.
 
UNLV opens Mountain West play this Saturday by traveling to Hawai'i. The game will be televised nationally by The CW starting at 7 p.m. PT.
