PURPOSES

1. To streamline and promote efficient communication between the UNLV athletics department administration and the student-athlete population

2. To provide the student-athlete population with an opportunity to more effectively communicate with UNLV athletics department administration and provide suggestions on programs designed to serve their needs.

3. To actively encourage more involvement of the student-athletes in campus and community projects

4. To design and implement programs that will encourage academic achievement, health promotion, social responsibility and general awareness

MEMBERSHIP

The membership shall be composed of one voting member and one alternate from each of the 17 intercollegiate varsity teams and the dance and cheer squad and one athletic trainer. Each member will serve as a liaison between the Board and their individual team.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum requirements for UNLV-SAAB membership

GPA of 2.5 or better. If GPA falls below the minimum requirement then the representative shall meet with the Assistant Athletic Director of Compliance and Student Services.

Consistency with UNLV-SAAB purposes.

Attendance at each weekly meeting (by member or alternate)

STANDING COMMITTEES

Committee chairpersons shall be elected by the UNLV-SAAB members. Membership on committees is open to academically eligible student-athletes. Each committee will be advised by an athletics department staff member. The five standing committees are:

1. Student-Athlete Educational Program Committee

2. Student-Athlete Alcohol/Drug Program Committee

3. Student-Athlete Educational Outreach Program Committee

4. Student-Athlete Community Outreach Program Committee

5. Student-Athlete Nutrition Program Committee

EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

The UNLV-SAAB Executive Committee shall consist of a President, Vice-President, Secretary, and a Treasury committee, as well as the Assistant Athletic Director of Compliance. The responsibilities shall include,

President - Shall Preside over Athletic Council meetings and shall appoint the chairs of the standing committies. Shall be in charge of developing an agenda for each meeting with assistance from the Assistant Athletic Director of Compliance as well as the Vice President as needed

Vice President - Shall act in the absence of the President, overseeing all duties of the President. Further, the vice-president will oversee the financial responsibiliteis of the SAAB

Secrectary - Will be responsible for taking minutes for the meeting and is responsible for publishing minutes and distributing them to all members prior to the next meeting. The Athletic Director office staff will assist.

Athletic Committee Respresentative - Two: Shall attend meetings of the Inter-Collegiate Senate Athletic Council. The two representatives to the Athletic Committee should be one male and one female.

ELECTIONS

All board-elected positions (Executive Committee) will take place during the last meeting of the academic year. All board team representatives will be elected during the eighth week of spring semester each year

STUDENT-ATHLETE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING COMMITTEE

Will be responsible for designing and implementing appropriate educational interventions for the student-athlete population. Programs will take a variety of formats: workshops, lectures and hands-on experiential projects. Some of the topics available:

Stress Management
Time Management
Communication Skills
Decision Making
Sexual Harassment
Media Relations
Study Skills
Sexual Awareness
Sexually Transmitted Infections

STUDENT ATHLETE ALCOHOL/DRUG PROGRAM COMMITTEE

Will be responsible for designing and implementing appropriate chemical awareness interventions for the student athlete population. The Program is a comprehensive four-year, 12-quarter curricular-based opportunity that will focus on preventions (education) and intervention (treatment) to encourage healthy lifestyles and decision-making. The Program involves an in-house departmental component for the UNLV student-athletes as well as a community outreach component

In-house education will focus primarily on:

Mood-altering and performance-enhancing drugs
Alcohol
Smokeless tobacco
Impaired driving
Panel discussions, personal testimonials
Date rape education and prevention
Leadership skills training
Designated Driver Program

Community outreach component will focus primarily on:

DARE
Prom promise
Speakers Bureau for local schools and community organizations

STUDENT-ATHLETE EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH PROGRAM COMMITTEE

Will be responsible for designing and implementing appropriate educational outreach programs. The purpose is to solidify the role of the UNLV student-athletes as representatives of the university in sending the message of the importance of an education. The educational outreach program will include:

School tutoring
Volunteering in Nevada Reading Week
Comprehensive involvement in the Adopt-A-School Program
Speakers Bureau for local schools and community organizations
Socials

STUDENT-ATHLETE COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAMMING COMMITTEE

Will be responsible for designing and implementing appropriate community volunteer/fund-raising activities for the campus and Southern Nevada Community. The program will focus on the role of the UNLV athlete as a role model ad provides an opportunity for the student-athlete to give back to the community that supports them. The Community Outreach Program will include involvement in:

Fundraisers
Volunteering
Speakers Bureau for campus and community organizations

STUDENT-ATHLETE NUTRITIONAL PROGRAM COMMITTEE

Will be responsible for designing and implementing appropriate nutritional activities/programs for the campus and the Southern Nevada Community. The Program will focus on the role of nutrition and hygiene and the student-athlete's lives. The nutritional program will include,
