The UNLV women’s basketball team will be back at home for two WAC games this week. UNLV will face the Colorado State Rams on Thursday, Jan. 29 and will then face Wyoming on Saturday, Jan. 31. Both games will be held at Lied Gymnasium (1,500) and begin at 7:05 p.m. The games may be heard on KSFN-1140 AM with Bob Blum calling the action.
The Lady Rebels The Lady Rebels (2-16, 1-6 WAC) dropped two games on the road last week. UNLV was defeated by BYU, 66-54, and then-No. 13 Utah, 75-49. The Lady Rebels, who are in seventh place in the WAC’s Mountain Division, are led by senior guard Taneisha Gossett who leads the team in scoring with 12.1 ppg. Junior forward Angalete Dye leads the team and is second in the WAC in rebounding with 8.6 per game and is second on the team in scoring with 8.1 ppg. As a team UNLV is shooting 37 percent from the field, 30 percent from three-point range and 61 percent from the free throw line. The Lady Rebels return seven players from last year’s squad that recorded an overall record of 4-23, finishing seventh in the WAC’s Pacific Division at 2-14. UNLV is participating in the Mountain Division this season because of the WAC’s rotating quadrants. Head Coach LaDonna McClain is in her second season at UNLV and eighth overall as a head coach.
The Opponents Colorado State (15-3, 5-2 WAC) defeated San Jose State (70-56) on the road and Wyoming (99-67) at home last week. CSU is tied with New Mexico for second place in the WAC’s Mountain Division. Junior guard Becky Hammon is leading the team and the WAC in scoring with 23.0 ppg. Junior forward Katie Cronin leads the team in rebounding with 7.2 per game and is second on the team and third in the WAC in scoring with 19.5 ppg. As a team, the Rams are shooting 47 percent from the field, 35 percent from three-point range and 68 percent from the free throw line. CSU finished the 1996-97 season with an overall record of 21-7 and was second in the WAC’s Pacific Division at 12-4. Head Coach Tom Collen is in his first season as a head coach.
Wyoming (6-11, 2-5 WAC) defeated Denver (79-60) at home and lost to Colorado State (99-67) on the road last week. Wyoming is in sixth place in the WAC’s Mountain Division. Senior guard Courtney Stapp leads the team and is 10th in the WAC in scoring with 16.6 ppg. Junior center Rebecca Tomlin leads the team in rebounding with 7.9 per game and is second in scoring with 12.1 ppg. As a team UW is shooting 40 percent from the field, 31 percent from three-point range and 72 percent from the free throw line. Wyoming finished the 1996-97 season with an overall record of 17-11 and was fourth in the WAC’s Pacific Division at 9-7. Head Coach Chad Lavin is in his 12th year at Wyoming and 16th year as a head coach.
Series History Colorado State leads the series with UNLV 3-1. CSU won the last meeting between the two teams on Jan. 3, 1998 in Fort Collins, Colo., 90-50. Wyoming leads the series with UNLV 4-1. UW won the last meeting between the two teams on Jan. 1, 1998 in Laramie, Wyo., 64-50.

Saturday vs. Wyoming is Part of Take a Kid to the Game (TAKG) The UNLV Lady Rebels game on Saturday, Jan. 31 vs. Wyoming is part of the Take a Kid to the game (TAKG) program. The nationwide program, developed by Host Communications, runs concurrently with the 1998 National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) celebration. NGWSD has evolved into a day to remember the past and recognize current sports achievements by girls and women. Children under the age of 18 will be admitted free with a paying adult. More than 100 college campuses nationwide are participating in the TAKG program throughout the women’s basketball season. The program, which was developed as a marketing program, builds awareness and participation in women’s athletics while exposing corporate America to the extremely beneficial sponsorship and marketing opportunities in women’s athletics. Official sponsors include Lifetime Television For Women, Nabisco and Phoenix Home Life Mutual Insurance Company. In addition to the free admission for youths with an accompanying adult, there will be free posters, a youth basketball game, an American Airlines Shootout and UNLV player and coaches autographs after the game.
Atop the NCAAÂ Junior forward Angalete Dye has recorded the second-best rebounding performance for any individual in the nation this season. Dye pulled down 23 rebounds vs. Long Beach State on Nov. 23. Since then three players have recorded 24 rebounds. Dye was tied for 16th in the nation in rebounding as of Dec. 15. She had averaged 10.3 rebounds per game through seven games. She is no longer among the NCAA leaders in rebounding.
Leaders of the WACÂ Junior forward Angalete Dye is second in the WAC in rebounding. Dye is averaging 8.6 rebounds per game. She is also tied for eighth in the WAC in blocks with 0.9 per game. Senior guard Taneisha Gossett is tied for 18th in blocks with 0.5 per game. As a team the Lady Rebels are seventh in the WAC in rebounding, pulling down 39.5 per game. UNLV is also seventh in blocks with 2.2 and is eighth in steals with 10.2 per game.
Lady Rebels in the Mack UNLV will host its final home game of the 1997-98 season at the Thomas & Mack Center vs. Hawai’i on Feb. 26. The Lady Rebels have hosted three games in the building so far this season. UNLV lost to Northern Arizona (91-72) on Dec. 17, lost to then-No. 3 Connecticut (80-47) on Dec. 27 and defeated Loyola Marymount (86-60) on Dec. 30. UNLV has hosted 89 regular season games at the T&M over 15 years and has a mark of 69-20 in those games. UNLV hosted two games in the building during the 1996-97 season, losing to UCSB (101-77) on Dec. 30 and defeating the Air Force Academy (85-62) on Feb. 20.
Lady Rebel Honors Senior guard Taneisha Gossett was selected to the Las Vegas Club Shootout All-Tournament Team. Gossett recorded two double-doubles in the tournament, which was held Dec. 5-6. She had 13 points and 12 rebounds vs. Youngstown State and 16 points and 13 rebounds vs. Middle Tennessee State.
Top-Ranked Schedule UNLV had two opponents this season that are currently ranked in the top four. The Lady Rebels lost to Louisiana Tech (4th-USA Today/ESPN, 4th-AP) on Nov. 28 and lost to Connecticut (2nd-USA Today/ESPN, 2nd-AP) on Dec. 27. UNLV faced Utah on Jan. 24 and will battle the Utes again in Las Vegas on Feb. 19. The Utes are now ranked 9th in the USA Today/ESPN poll and 11th in the AP. The Lady Rebels are also slated to battle Hawai’i. The Rainbow Wahine are ranked 21st in the USA Today/ESPN poll and 23rd in the AP. Other opponents on UNLV’s schedule that are receiving votes are Colorado State and New Mexico.
Last Week
PROVO, Utah (1/22/98) – Senior guard Kari Gallup scored 18 and freshman center April Hayes scored all 11 of her points in the second half as BYU defeated the UNLV Lady Rebels 66-54 in a Western Athletic Conference game, Thursday night at BYU’s Marriott Center. Trailing 37-34 with 16:01 left in the game, BYU went on a 19-4 run to take a 53-41 lead with 5:00 remaining. The Cougars held on from there for the 12-point victory. UNLV led by as many as seven as it took a 20-13 lead with 8:53 left in the first half and led 31-27 at halftime. Senior guard Taneisha Gossett tied her season-high with 21 points for UNLV (2-15, 1-5), while senior guard Toby Girard added 13. Hayes added six rebounds for the Cougars as they improved their record to 7-9, 2-4.
Salt Lake City, Utah (1/24/98) – Senior guard Julie Krommenhoek scored a game-high 23 points as No. 13 Utah defeated the UNLV Lady Rebels 75-49 in a Western Athletic Conference game, Saturday afternoon at the Jon M. Huntsman Center. The Lady Rebels had the lead, 24-22, with 4:44 left in the first half, however the Utes pulled away with a 13-0 run and went into halftime with the 35-24 lead. Utah was 6-for-9 from three-point range in the second half and led by as many as 27 points en route to the victory. UNLV (2-16, 1-6) was led by junior Liz Wolfe’s nine points and game-high 13 rebounds. Senior guards Taneisha Gossett and Toby Girard each recorded nine points as well for the Lady Rebels. Krommenhoek made 5-of-8 three-point attempts as Utah improved its record to 16-0, 7-0. Senior guard Alli Bills turned in 11 points and a game-high eight assists for the Utes.
Next Week UNLV will be at home at Lied Gymnasium for a contest with the Air Force Academy on Wed., Feb. 4 at 7:05 p.m. The Lady Rebels will then fly to Hawai’i for a matchup with the Rainbow Wahine on Sat., Feb. 7 at 7:00 p.m. HST.
The Last Time UNLV broke its 26-game road losing streak by defeating Air Force (88-74) on Jan. 10. Since then the Lady Rebels have lost two on the road and four straight overall. The Air Force win also marked the last time UNLV won a WAC contest. UNLV’s last road win before that was at Long Beach State (64-63) during the 1995-96 season. The Lady Rebels are 0-1 vs. Colorado State in Las Vegas. CSU won the only meeting at Lied Gymnasium, last season 68-52. UNLV is 1-1 vs. Wyoming in Las Vegas. Wyoming won the last meeting at Lied Gymnasium, last season 71-54.
The Last Time vs. Colorado State FORT COLLINS, Colo. (1/3/98) – Junior guard Becky Hammon scored a game-high 17 points and three others scored in double figures as Colorado State defeated the UNLV Lady Rebels, 90-50, in a Western Athletic Conference game at CSU’s Moby Arena. After leading 9-5 with 13:18 to play in the first half, Colorado State went on a 19-0 run over 5:44 to take a 28-5 lead. Hammon’s three three-pointers in the first half helped the Rams to a 39-17 advantage at the break. Colorado State scored the first nine points of the second half as part of a 22-6 run as they cruised to the victory. Junior forward Eishia Brightwell led the Lady Rebels (1-12, 0-2) with season-highs of 13 points and seven rebounds. Junior guard Karen Webster added 10 points for UNLV. Colorado State (11-1, 2-0) was assisted in the win by junior forward Shannon Randles (15 pts), sophomore guard Jacque Johnson (11) and senior center Zenarae Pieters (10). Freshman forward Farah McDill led the Rams in rebounding with 10.
The Last Time vs. Wyoming LARAMIE, Wyo. (1/1/98) – Senior guard Courtney Stapp led all scorers with 15 points and junior center Rebecca Tomlin grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds as Wyoming defeated the UNLV Lady Rebels, 64-50, in both team’s Western Athletic Conference opener at UW’s Arena-Auditorium. Wyoming held a 21-11 advantage with 7:51 remaining in the first half as UNLV held the Cowgirls scoreless for the rest of the half, outscoring them 10-0 to go into halftime tied at 21 apiece. The Lady Rebels scored the first six points of the second half to take a 27-21 lead. Wyoming went on a 20-6 run over the next 6:48 and led 41-33. UNLV cut Wyoming’s lead to 43-41 with 7:43 to play, however Wyoming went on a 14-3 run over the next 3:51 to take control of the game. Junior center Liz Wolfe led the Lady Rebels (1-11, 0-1) in scoring for the second consecutive game recording 13 points. Senior guard Taneisha Gossett added 12 points and junior forward Angalete Dye led the team with 10 rebounds. Wyoming (4-6, 1-0) was assisted in the win by junior guard Regan Dulaney, who added 11 points for the Cowgirls.
Last Year The Lady Rebels struggled last year in LaDonna McClain’s first season in Las Vegas. UNLV recorded a record of 4-23 overall and 2-14 in WAC play. The Lady Rebels finished seventh in the Pacific Division, failing to qualify for the WAC Tournament at the Thomas & Mack Center.
Lady Rebel Returnees The Lady Rebels return eight players from last year’s roster. 6-1 junior forward Angalete Dye is one of the returning post players. She recorded career highs of 30 points and 13 rebounds vs. TCU, the last game of the 1996-97 season. One of three seniors, 5-5 guard Toby Girard ran the point last season. She averaged 8.9 ppg. Another senior, 5-9 guard Taneisha Gossett returns as the Lady Rebels’ leading scorer, recording 10.7 ppg during 1996-97. Sophomore guard Sara Hoopes, the only local player on the team, redshirted last year and is currently academically ineligible. The final senior, 5-11 forward Tekeira Strambler saw limited action last season recording a career-best 16 points vs. Fairfield. Karen Webster, a 5-8 junior guard returns at the two-guard spot. She averaged 3.3 ppg last season. Liz Wolfe, a 6-3 junior center looks to be one of the more improved players on the team. Wolfe averaged 3.1 ppg and 3.7 rpg last year. The final returnee is 6-foot junior forward Amy Wunderlich. The most physical player on the team, she averaged 6.1 ppg and 5.0 rpg.
New Faces The Lady Rebels have six new additions to the program, four coming from junior college programs and two out of high school. Eishia Brightwell, a 6-1 junior from Lawrenceburg, Ind., comes to UNLV from Vincennes University where she averaged 14.9 ppg, 6.9 rpg and 2.1 bpg. Rashmi Houston, a 5-9 junior guard from Pulaski, Tenn., played at Northwest Shoals Community College in Ala., where she averaged 14 ppg, 6 rpg and 4 apg last year. She injured her right ACL during practice prior to this season’s opening game. She will have surgery and use this season as a redshirt year. Kristen Pool, a 5-6 point guard from Provo, Utah, attended Utah Valley State College averaging 6.0 ppg, 5.8 apg and 2.1 spg as the team won the conference championship with a 25-7 mark last year. Kedonica Qualls, the final junior-college transfer, is a 5-6 junior guard from Jonesboro, La. She went to Kilgore Junior College in Texas where she averaged 7 ppg, 5 apg and 3 spg last season. Brooke Ingalls is a freshman forward from Redmond, Wash. She attended Eastlake High School, averaging 13 ppg, 9 rpg and 5 apg her senior season. Tina Garcia is a freshman guard from Huntington Beach, Calif., who attended Mater Dei High School. She had reconstructive knee surgery during the summer and is finishing up her rehabilitation. Garcia will use this season as a redshirt year.
Head Coach LaDonna McClain Head Coach LaDonna McClain (Missouri Southern, ‘87) is in her second season at UNLV with a record of 6-39. The fifth head coach in the 23-year history of the UNLV women’s basketball program, she was hired in the spring of 1996 to replace former Head Coach Jim Bolla. In her first season with UNLV her team recorded a 4-23 mark. McClain came from Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tenn., where she headed that program for six seasons. APSU went 5-21 in her first season and she built it into the 1995-96 Ohio Valley Conference regular-season co-champions and tournament champions. She also led that team to its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. McClain is in her eighth season as a head coach and has a career record of 66-142.
Assistant Coaches Coming from Austin Peay State University with McClain are second-year UNLV assistant coaches Sheryl Krmpotich (Xavier, ‘92), Marcus Payne (Southwestern, ‘87) and Carrie Daniels (Austin Peay, ‘96). Director of Basketball Operations Steve Corraro (UNLV, ‘95) is in his fifth season with the Lady Rebel program.
