Devin Matthews was hired as a graduate assistant for the UNLV men's basketball program prior to the 2022-23 season.
In his first season with the Runnin' Rebels, he helped the team to 19 wins, including two over ranked teams. The two victories over top 25 squads were the most in a season for UNLV since 2015-16. The Runnin’ Rebels raced out to a 10-0 start in 2022-23, marking the program's best in 34 years, while their non-conference record of 11-1 was their best in 32 years. After the 10-0 start, UNLV was receiving votes in both polls.Â

After spending one season as a graduate assistant, Matthews was promoted to assistant coach and director of player development for the 2023-24 season.
That campaign was an impressive one as the Runnin’ Rebels achieved their most wins since 2013-14, made their first postseason appearance since 2012-13 and recorded their first postseason win since 2007-08. The Runnin’ Rebels were invited to the NIT where they advanced to the quarterfinals after a road win at Princeton and a home victory over Boston College before falling at eventual champion Seton Hall in the quarterfinals.

Matthews came to the Runnin’ Rebel program in 2022 after coaching at Wasatch Academy, a national powerhouse where he would coach eight future Division I players as well as one McDonalds All-American in the inaugural year of the NIBC, now known as EYBL scholastic.
Prior to his time at Wasatch, Matthews spent a year at the College of Southern Nevada. He began his college coaching career in 2018 with a two-year stint at Northwest University in Kirkland, Washington.
Born and raised in Las Vegas, Matthews has realized his dream of coaching at UNLV. His college journey began at Pierce College, a junior college in Washington, where he is the all-time leader in wins and assists. He then transferred to Central Washington where he ranks in the top-five in school history in assists as well as being one of the only Division II players to average 10-5-5 during the 2015-16 season.
Following college, Matthews played professionally in Kosovo and Indonesia before deciding to start his coaching career.

Matthews earned his bachelor’s degree in sociology from Central Washington in 2016. He earned his master’s in urban leadership from UNLV in 2023. He and his wife Jess were married in 2024.
